Junior Golf Director The 2011 Gateway Junior Program is already shaping up to have an exciting year. A
new phone application, a spring schedule, and a new facebook page are just a few of the rea-

A Gateway Junior phone application has been in the works for a while now, and
2-4 Summer Schedule thanks to Josh Riley and the Gateway Section Office the application has been launched on
5 Rule Tip iphone and android platforms for your convenience. Juniors will have the ability to register
for upcoming events and keep up with current news for the program. This new software
6 Fitness Tip offers the ability to register for events anywhere you have service with your phone. Parents
7 Junior Stories and junior golfers will be able to easily pull up results from past events and check tee times
for upcoming tournaments. It’s amazing to think that all this information will be just a fin-

and let others know what you think.
A spring season has been launched to give opportunities during the weekends for
junior golfers to compete and get geared up for the summer events. This will allow juniors
to get an early start on the 2011 season and play some great courses in the area. We will be
offering a total of 11 events for the Spring Series. Three of these events will be limited to
Novice 9 and Mini 9 players, and to start the season off we will host an event at WingHaven
Country Club on March 27 for 18 Holers only. Make sure and visit the website at
www.gatewaypga.org/jrgolf to register for the spring events!
A Gateway Junior PGA Facebook page has been launched for juniors in our pro-
gram. This will allow juniors to get access to news and stay connected. We will post pictures
and videos from events and give juniors the chance to get involved with the organization.
Members can use facebook as a way to communicate with other junior golfers and stay up to
date on the tournaments and events with the program. When you log on to facebook search
for Gateway Junior PGA and click the “like” tab to follow all the program news as it happens!
I feel very blessed to be a part of the Gateway PGA Section team and to be involved
with the juniors and parents in this area. The Junior Newsletter will be our way of commu-
nicating to members and it will give us the opportunity to stay connected with one another.
I look forward to meeting everyone involved with our program this year. It will be exciting
Junior Tour to watch our juniors grow as players and individuals as they compete and reach for their
Registration goals.

Begins Sincerely,
February 15th!

Robert's Rules by Robert Shogren
From Woods & Irons Magazine
Since this is the first article, it is logical to address one of the key elements within Rule 1, which is entitled, "The Game." Rule
1-4 deals with Equity and is entitled, Points Not Covered by Rules. The theory behind the Equity rule is that like situations
should all be treated alike. However, there is always the judgment factor in proceeding in an equitable manner.

Basically, we all know the Rules of Golf cover hundreds of situations...yet, there are uncommon occurences happening
around the world on golf courses on a daily basis. Thus, decisions based on Equity must be made...and that means doing
what is fair.

Most of us know there is free relief, in most cases, from immovable obstructions like cart paths and abnormal ground condi-
tions--including casual water. However, what do you do when:

• You are playing golf in Arizona and your ball ends up next to a reptile,
• A hornet's nest interferes with your swing in the rough in Missouri,
• An eight-foot gator inches his way from a small lagoon and is heading for your ball in the middle of the fairway in Flor-
ida,
• A nest in a bush may be roughed up when you believe your normal follow-thru will hit the home of some baby birds in
Michigan, or
• You start with 14 clubs and you know you may not replace your driver unless it is damaged in the normal course of play
during the round. However, a large palm tree branch falls on your driver in your bag and breaks the club in two while you
are enjoying a beautiful round on a wonderful 18 in Hawaii.

Needless to say, I could go on and on with numerous similar scenarios which do occur on a very frequent basis. All of the
above rulings will be based on Equity...and sound judgment applies. Dangerous situations will always bring free relief; little
birds should certainly be protected and a falling branch breaking your driver should allow you to replace with no penalty.

While you may play many rounds with no Equity-type situations arising, perhaps some day it will happen and you will know
if there is no rule which applies, do what is Fair and Equitable!!!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Retired from a 30-year career at Maritz, Robert Shogren has been a golf rules official for the last twenty-
one years serving all levels of golf from High School to College and Amateur to Top-Notch Professional. With only a few men
and women in the Greater St. Louis area who are highly active rules officials, Shogren is busy and on-call eleven to twelve
months a year. For two to three months each winter, Bob officiates for the PGA?of America. Presently serving the midwest
region and Florida, Bob has officiated tournaments for numerous organizations throughout the country. To quote Bob, “I
have done them all,” including conducting Rules of Golf, on-course clinics at a variety of public courses and private clubs.
Currently, he is the Assistant Tournament Director of the Gateway PGA–Concentrating in the Rules Area.

Proper Diet Fuels Golf Performance

Fueling your body is the best way to jumpstart your golf game, but it takes time management and good planning to fuel well
and responsibly. Sensible nutrition results in more energy, a stronger golf performance and better health overall.

Following are quick tips to help you make the most of meal times. (Don’t skip any meals—they each help you meet daily nu-
tritional needs.):
• The best energy booster is breakfast because it improves the overall quality of your diet, prevents the need for sugar
fixes and enhances performance.
• Throughout the day, make sure you get adequate carbohydrates and proteins. Carbohydrates fuel muscles, while pro-
tein builds them.
• Eat whole grains. Examples of good whole grain choices are wheat, rice, oats and corn. You can find whole grains in
breads, cereals and crackers or rolls.
• Eat a variety of fruits, such as oranges, apples, bananas, grapes and raisins.
• Vegetables that hit the target are broccoli, carrots, and celery. Add a variety of other vegetables and mix up the color.
• Go lean with protein, choosing lean meats and chicken, as well as fish, beans, peas and seeds.
• Be sure to eat calcium rich foods like milk, yogurt and cheeses. Consume low fat dairy and calcium rich foods, as well
as a bit of healthy fat, on a daily basis.
• Take in enough fluids to prevent dehydration; drink before you get thirsty.

Obviously, you’ll want to limit sugars, salt and fried foods. For better energy, eat before you get hungry because once hunger
sets in, you’re more likely to get careless about what you choose to eat.

Also, add two to three healthy snacks to keep your energy up. It is not true that more is better—quality, not quantity, is what
impacts performance. Eating a healthier diet will give you more energy, which means better performance on the golf course.
In addition, weight management becomes easier. On the flip side, an inadequate diet results in fatigue.
