has anyone actually passed this step. Can someone tell me which order you solder the LED, resistor, and
switch without only showing a diagram?

it dosen't really matter. a diode is uni directional... as long is it, the switch, the resistor and the battery make
a big loop if laid flat (series circuit) you should be good. if when you close the switch (turn it on) the led don't
light up (provided the led and battery are good) switch what wire goes to the positive and negative plates on
the battery. the resistor sets the current limit through the whole circuit the diode having virtually no
resistance would over current (blow up) in absence of something limiting it. in fact if you didn't care about
turning it off you could leave off the switch altogether.

an advanced concept for the switch is to glue several pieces of plexiglass together slightly larger than a
chosen shape. then drill or cut a shape into them (sometimes easier if cut before glue depending on shape like
just a round hole would be better glued than drilled) and attach a switch to the bottom so that the button sticks
into the cavity (one of the press close press open kind). wrap the "extension" in wire to make it an
electromagnet and connect the wire in line between the switch and the resistor. now use a steel blank in the
aforementioned shape that is the size of the whole to trip the switch. this if done properly gives a neat effect
the cube lights up if you insert the metal "key" but it does not fall out when lit. pressing on it again (turning off
the switch) turns the light off and releases the "key". putting a capacitor (the size will vary the amount of fade)
BAY AREA MAKER
across the leads of the led would give a fade effect when turning on and off. the pdf is a pic the site was giving
me crap about uploading a open office drawing.

theres an easier way to put the LED in the box. look up the led throwies instructable. no resistor or pushbutton

i thnk a reed switch would be a good idea you just need it near a magnet

the_don125 says: Sep 20, 2009. 1:05 PM
While that method is indeed easier, it will severely hurt the battery life, first because it prevents the LED from
ever turning off, and second because a high current is going to be flowing through the LED for its entire
3 lifespan, draining the battery (which cannot be changed) very rapidly.

what does the resistor do?

REPLY

dumle29 says: Sep 19, 2009. 2:31 PM

it reduces the power going to the LED so it doesn't burn out

A little bit. So the led attaches to the resistor. What about the button?

If you get really creative, you could build a gravity switch and use that instead of a button. Granted, it will
only work in one orientation but you could have a completely sealed box. I might put an instructable up
for the switch once I figure out how to build one.

JavaNut13 says: Oct 7, 2009. 5:48 PM

You can put the button anywhere in the circuit, just make sure that the actual moving part is outside the
box.

just an idea, but it would be really cool to use a reed switch so it would be really easy and cool to light it up.
You could pass it around and only you could light it up because you have a magnet somewhere closing the
2 reed switch. *try to give some credit for this idea*

you could also diffuse the light by sanding the plexiglass inside & out, before assembly obviously, or lining it
with paper or even cotton wadding. you could also just use translucent white plexiglass like they use to make
1 light tables.

hey just buy a solor paneled garden light, it already has the switch and LED, you could swap em out. then
just stick the solor panel on one of the sides, prolly the top. you will want to drill a second hole.

With the wiring of the led, battery and on/off switch, can you put a picture, or diagram on how you made it. Just
not 100% sure on the construction, and don't want to waste money in case i overpower the LED. Thanks
