Sports @ SIMSR
“He who wants peace must prepare for war”, and so to speak begins the journey of the sporting legion at
SIMSR. Much like the calm before a storm, the travails of a B-school are part of the entire learning spectrum, with
sports playing the role of the glue that binds it all. What is taught in management, Leadership, focus, strategy,
vision, are all rolled into one lesson after another, game after game, sport after sport.
The sporting season began with a resounding win. The proverbial David and Goliath story was played out at the
Inter B-school football tournament, ‘Goalzzz-09’ held at Nirma University, Ahmedabad. After clearing the initial
hurdles, SIMSR set up a date with IIM A (Title holder’s for last 4 years), for a momentous final. Both teams were
locked at 1-1 till the full time. Even penalties could not separate the teams with both teams scoring 4 goals each.
The match went down to the wire with SIMSR winning it on the first penalty of the sudden death, to end up with a
score of 6-5 on penalties. SIMSR team led by Kumar Manglam Choudhary thus became the Giant killer. Anup
Pawar was awarded the Golden Boot Award for scoring the maximum goals.
Without resting on its laurels, SIMSR then prepared for IMT-Ghaziabad’s Chakravyuh ‘10(5th – 7th February), one
of the most prestigious and gruelling sports events among B-schools. With a contingent of 25 players led by Mani
Pradhan and quite a few supporters, SIMSR made its mark at Chakravyuh with its best ever haul at IMT-G. It
participated in all the events ranging from Lawn tennis to shot put.
SIMSR played the 3 final events for Basketball, Cricket and Arm Wrestling all against IMT-G.and won two out of
them leaving the host IMT-G awestruck. SIMSR Cricket team led by Mani Pradhan and Arm Wrestling team led by
Ishan Khhot won Gold and the Basketball team led by Deepak Malhotra won Silver.
Short on the heels of this, the battleground was drawn a lot closer to home, with S P Jain’s SPrint 2010(19th - 21st
February). Again, SIMSR participated in all the events that S P Jain had to offer from Squash to Athletics, and
surprisingly it was the women of SIMSR that outshone its men and deservingly so.
The girl’s contingent won 4 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. The 4 golds for Throwball team led by Ami Thakkar,
Basketball team led by Anchal Sachan, Badminton team led by Rachana Bajaj and Evellyn Goes for 100 m sprint.
Anchal Sachan won silver for 400 m race.
The Badminton Boys team led by Janit Parekh won Gold. The Men Relay team and cricket team led by Gaurav Patil
won Silver.
