Do you prefer to download and use publicly available software binaries or source code at
no cost?

Like our Community release software, Professional & Enterprise

Edition source code is viewable and modifiable; however, only
subscribers may access it. This is because Professional &
Enterprise Edition products include value-added functionality,
Professional / Enterprise samples, and documentation.

Jaspersoft‟s Community releases are freely available at

www.jasperforge.org. Everyone is free to download the binary
distributions, source code, samples, and documentation that
accompany the Community release software.

2. Embeddability and Distribution Rights

Do you want to modify, OEM, include, or embed Jaspersoft software for use in a publicly
distributed product, application, appliance, or service?

Jaspersoft software is built to be embedded in other applications. As the copyright holder of

Jaspersoft software, Jaspersoft can offer flexible licensing terms to meet the needs of most
third party developers. When integrated with or embedded into another product,
Jaspersoft‟s software can be redistributed (1) under the terms of the GNU GPL open source
license, or (2) under commercial terms for third-party profit.

For OEMs, ISVs, and For-Profit Developers

Professional / Enterprise Jaspersoft OEM licensing is an affordable and appealing option

for OEMs, ISVs, and for-profit developers who want to include
full reporting, analysis, and other BI capabilities in their
applications.

End-User Licensing
Professional / Enterprise
Jaspersoft commercial end user license agreements (EULA) grant
the right to use—but not redistribute—Jaspersoft Professional &
Enterprise Edition software. If you want to copy, share, or
redistribute Professional & Enterprise Edition software, you must

For Open Source Developers

Jaspersoft Community release software is covered by the GNU

Community General Public License (GPL) or Lesser General Public License (L-
GPL). The right to freely use, modify, and redistribute software
is fundamental to the GNU GPL agreement. Those who abide by
it can do whatever they wish with Jaspersoft Community release
software for their own organization‟s use.

If you release modifications or embed Jaspersoft Community

release software in a publicly distributed application, you may be
obligated to contribute your entire work to the open source
community under the GNU GPL. Alternatively, you can obtain an

Do you want product enhancements rolled up into fewer releases?

Jaspersoft Professional & Enterprise Edition products are

updated on a managed release cycle. This means that the
Professional & Enterprise Edition rolls up enhancements into
fewer releases throughout the year.
Professional / Enterprise
Managed release cycles can allow customers to plan and
allocate resources for upgrades in advance, reduce the
overall effort required to update software, and can minimize
risk when deploying changes into production systems.

Jaspersoft's Open Source projects are frequently updated at

JasperForge. Individuals, software developers, and
organizations that prefer software updates as soon as
they're available may prefer Community release.
Community
Professional & Enterprise Edition subscribers can also take
advantage of frequent Community releases. New software
features can be evaluated in test environments early,
potentially reducing the testing and evaluation period when
the Professional & Enterprise Edition software becomes
available.

5. Support Guarantees

Do you need guaranteed support for mission-critical and production applications, or

support for older releases?

Jaspersoft provides a full range of support services for both Community, Professional &
Enterprise Edition software.

Jaspersoft Professional & Enterprise products are bundled

with a commercial license and an annual support
subscription.

Professional / Enterprise Professional & Enterprise Edition software is supported for a

minimum period of twelve (12) months after the release of
the next major release, where in version X.y.z, “X”
represents the major release number. This allows
organizations to stabilize on a specific version and maintain

that system for an extended period of time.

Community-based support is freely available to everyone

through JasperForge forums. The two most recent minor
releases of Community release software are supported by
Jaspersoft on an incident-pack basis, where in version X.y.z,
Community where “X.y” represents the minor release number.

6. Legal Matters: Indemnification and Warranties

Do you require product warranties and indemnification?

Indemnification and warranties are of greatest concern to large organizations, though

individuals may also have an interest in these legal protections. Organizations and
individuals should always review software license agreements and assess their tolerance for
risk (legal and operational) as part of the evaluation process.

Jaspersoft Professional & Enterprise Licenses Grant Legal Protections

Jaspersoft Professional & Enterprise licenses provide

indemnification, which is expected in commercial software
licenses. This is a significant benefit that you will not see in
open source licenses.
Professional / Enterprise
Jaspersoft will indemnify (free from harm) the user of
Jaspersoft software if a third-party patent holder claims that
Jaspersoft and users of the Jaspersoft software infringe the
patent-holder's intellectual property rights. Be sure to
review the Jaspersoft license for details.

Jaspersoft's Community release products are licensed under

the GNU Lesser General Public License (L-GPL) or General
Public License (GPL). The GNU open source licenses do not
provide protections against claims that the software may

(indemnification).

Indemnification matters because a third-party patent

holder, for example, could claim that users of the Jaspersoft
software infringe the patent-holder's intellectual property

Open Source Licenses Provide Software "As-Is"

Jaspersoft Professional & Enterprise licenses provide

warranties that are expected in commercial software
licenses. This is a significant benefit that you will not see in
Professional / Enterprise open source licenses.

The GNU GPL and L-GPL do not provide warranties. The

software is provided "as-is." If it is found to be defective,
the copyright owner (in this case, Jaspersoft), has no
Community obligations under the GNU open source licenses.
