Course Overview and Objectives: EN 1113 is designed to enhance and strengthen argumentative, analytical, and research
skills. To achieve this, you must write well-organized, thought-provoking, coherent essays based upon in-class readings and
discussions. These essays require the use of research materials, documentation of all sources according to MLA format, the
examination of ideas and values in literary works, a demonstrated understanding of literary elements, and few to no
grammatical errors.

Course Work: You will write 6 (including the final) original compositions. Each composition (with the exception of the
analysis and the final) will be written in two drafts—the first draft will be evaluated by peers, and the final draft will be
evaluated by the instructor. If you fail to attend the peer evaluation session or fail to have a completed draft to be
evaluated, you will be penalized one letter grade on the final version.

A= 900-1000
B= 800-899

Class Policies and Procedures:

1. Attend all classes. You may not make up class activities such as peer responses, exercises, in-class
writing, reading quizzes, and class discussions for any reason.
2. Turn in your work on time. I penalize essays (all drafts) 10 points per day for lateness. Computer/Printer
malfunctions are not an excuse. Under extreme circumstances, you may turn in a paper by 5:00 p.m. on the
day that it is originally due, if, and only if, you attend class that day.
3. Do your own work. I take academic misconduct very seriously and will prosecute you in accordance with
university policy if you plagiarize.
4. Come prepared to learn. Bring all appropriate materials (textbook, paper, pen, etc.) to class every day,
turn off all cell phones and electronic devices before we begin, and put away all outside reading material.
