January: Did you know...?

January is named after the Roman God, Janus, and in the northern hemisphere it is
the coldest month of the year.

The birthstone for January is the garnet and the flower for January is the snowdrop.

On 12 January 1972 a Boeing 747 completed its first transatlantic flight from New
York to London’s Heathrow Airport. Later on the 21 January 1976 Concorde also
made its first commercial flight.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 in Salzburg, Austria.

Mozart wrote over 600 works during his lifetime, including 41 symphonies and 27
piano concertos.

Capt. Robert Falcon Scott, better known as Scott of the Antarctic, was the first
person to reach the South Pole on 17 January 1912.

A A Milne was born on 18 January 1882, and is probably most famous for writing
Winnie the Pooh, which was based on his Son, Christopher’s soft toys.

Lewis Carroll
27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898
Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury in Chesire, on 27
January 1832. He was an English author, mathematician, logician, anglican deacon and
photographer.
Lewis Carroll is most famous for his story, ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, published
in 1865. It was written for Alice, the daughter of a friend.
His other writings included the sequel ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ as well as the poems
‘The Hunting of the Snark’ and Jabberwocky’.
The poem Jabberwocky, is considered by many to be one of the greatest nonsense
poems written in the English language. It was originally featured as a part of his novel
‘Through the Looking-Glass’.

Jabberwocky
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:

Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood, “And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
And burbled as it came! He chortled in his joy.

One, two! One, two! And through and through `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
He left it dead, and with its head All mimsy were the borogoves,
He went galumphing back. And the mome raths outgrabe.
