Star of the Week: Hope

The fifth grade teachers will be out of the
building Wednesday afternoon, all day
Thursday, and all day Friday. We are excited to
be attending an IB training in New Orleans. We
hope to come back filled with information on
Exhibition, which our fifth grade students will
be starting after Spring Break. Mrs. Esboldt will
be here in my classroom on those days.

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
In math this week, we finished and
tested on Unit 6, which was a short unit on
volume, capacity, and weight. We also started
Unit 8, which is a short unit that focuses on a few
algebra concepts – including exponents and
equations.
We continued our unit of inquiry this
week titled: We, the People. The central idea for
this planner is that systems of government
impact a community’s social and economic
condition. We looked at different types of
government around the world this week and
even got to see what it was like having a class
dictator. Students have done an excellent job
inquiring and reflecting on what we have
discussed and learned in class. Students will
begin working on the summative assessment
project next week.
This week in literacy, we continued
reading Daughter of Liberty, which is a true story
of the American Revolution. We also worked on
our rough drafts for our persuasive essay. Our
spelling list this week focused on words with
consonant digraphs and plural forms of words.
We also started working on a
PowerPoint slide show to present our buddy
interviews. Our media specialist, Ms. Dahl, came
in to review and help create our PowerPoints.
We also finished up our Winter MAP testing as
we completed the math portion today.
Remember – tonight is movie night!!

The MIPTO will be conducting a "Love to
read-a-thon" beginning on February 14th.

VALOGRAMS
To help lower the cost of 5th grade camp,
our school will be selling Valograms next
week. Students may purchase a Valogram
to send to their friends, siblings, or
teachers at our school. They only cost 10
cents and will be delivered to classrooms
on Monday, February 14.

VALENTINE’S DAY
Our classroom will be celebrating
Valentine’s Day on Monday, February 14. If
they choose, students will have the
opportunity to pass out Valentine’s in the
afternoon. Students must bring in a
Valentine for every classmate if they choose
to participate. Boxes and bags for storage
need to be made at home prior to our
celebration on Monday. I will also have
brown lunch bags for students if needed.
