2009 Buell Ulysses XB12XP
The new Buell Ulysses® Police XB12XP offers government agencies and private security
firms a quick and very nimble "special duty" patrol vehicle that is capable of travel over
a variety of terrain, from open highways to city streets to unpaved back-country roads.
Based on the versatile Buell Ulysses adventure sportbike, the Ulysses Police features
long-travel suspension, generous ground clearance and aggressive tires that allow it to
tackle roads too rough or narrow for confident travel in an automobile or on a
traditional police motorcycle. On smooth pavement, the Ulysses Police is an agile sport
motorcycle. The Ulysses Police can also accommodate a passenger. Available for order
through Buell dealers as of Tuesday, May 27 2008, production of the 2009 Ulysses Police
is scheduled to begin in August 2008.
Special features of the Ulysses Police include hard-shell top and side cases, each
removable and lockable. The side cases are narrower than the standard Ulysses
accessory side cases, allowing for more clearance in tight situations. On the Ulysses
Police model, the Buell Triple Tail system functions as a luggage rack with tie-down
hooks over the rear seat position, or as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails.
A tall windshield, heated hand grips, and handlebar deflectors are also standard
equipment. An available emergency response kit provides a siren and an LED lighting
package in three different color configurations (Red/Blue, Red/Red, or Blue/Blue).
The Ulysses Police is powered by an air/oil/fan-cooled, fuel-injected Buell
Thunderstorm 1203cc V-Twin engine that delivers 103 peak horsepower. This engine's
broad powerband and abundant torque gives the Ulysses the ability to proceed at lower
speeds over uneven or unpaved roads with less gear shifting, and to deliver instant
bursts of acceleration. The Ulysses Police has an EPA fuel mileage rating of 51 mpg
urban/64 mpg highway*. A Goodyear Hibrex final drive belt with Flexten Plus
technology is durable and never needs adjustment or lubrication.
Premium Showa front and rear suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can
be adjusted for passenger and gear weight simply by turning a dial located below the
left side of the seat. Suspension travel is 6.5 inches in front and 6.4 inches at the rear.
Ground clearance is 6.75 inches.
The Ulysses Police features a 4.4-gallon fuel reservoir integrated into the aluminum
frame. The lower center of mass achieved by carrying fuel in the frame, rather than in
a tank located high on top of the frame, enhances rider confidence on and off
pavement. The muffler is located below the engine to further lower the center of
gravity and centralize mass for improved handling in all situations. Low unsprung weight
helps keep the tires in contact with uneven road surfaces for improved control. The 17-
inch, six-spoke, reinforced cast-aluminum wheels feature a durable rim design, and
Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires deliver good traction on paved and unpaved roads. A dual
front fender system provides debris protection for the rider and the bike.
The Ulysses Police will be offered in two color choices: Birch White and Midnight Black.
*Based on tests conducted under lab conditions per U.S. EPA test procedures. Mileage
will vary depending on personal riding habits, weather conditions, trip length and
vehicle condition.

Media Press Release:

VERSATILE BUELL ULYSSES IS READY FOR ANY ROAD
Adventure Sportbike has Heated Grips and New Front End for 2008
EAST TROY, Wis. (July 8, 2007) – Significant changes to the front suspension and
steering, plus powertrain enhancements, improve the performance of the 2009 Buell
Ulysses XB12XP, an adventure sportbike designed to carry its rider beyond the end of
the pavement. The Ulysses features long-travel suspension, higher ground clearance
and more aggressive tires that allow it to explore the roughest roads with confidence.
But when the pavement is smooth and twisty, Ulysses performs like a flickable, agile
sport motorcycle, propelled by a 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin that is a bottomless pit of
pure torque. Innovative features and accessories make Ulysses a comfortable, capable
long-distance traveler or commuter. The versatile Buell Ulysses can take its rider where
ever the road is headed.
New on Ulysses XB12X for 2008
New 47mm front forks replace the previous 43 mm forks. Secured with a new triple
clamp design, this new front end improves the torsional rigidity of the entire chassis.
Fork flex is reduced during hard braking for improved stability and feedback.
Steering sweep lock-to-lock is increased to 74 degrees from 54 degrees to reduce the
turning radius in off-road low-speed maneuvers. New off-set triple clamps maintain the
23.5 degree rake and 4.8 inch trail.
Heated hand grips are now standard equipment on the 2008 Ulysses. The grips are rated
at 18 watts per side on the High setting and 11 watts per side on the Low setting.
New air guides positioned on the tail section of the Ulysses deflect engine heat away
from the rider's legs.
Modifications to the 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin engine enhance performance, reduce
maintenance, and allow a new redline of 7100 rpm (see separate Thunderstorm release
for details).
The instrument panel styling is refreshed and the tachometer reflects the new 7100-
rpm redline.
A commemorative Buell 25th Anniversary graphic with Erik Buell's signature is placed on
the handlebar clamp.
New color: The 2008 Ulysses XB12X is offered in a new color, Thrust Blue, in addition to
Barricade Orange and Midnight Black, each with Magnesium Tone wheels.
Ulysses XB12X: Imagine the Possibilities
The Buell Ulysses is a high-performance Adventure Sport motorcycle that is capable of
confident travel over dirt, gravel and other unpaved road surfaces. Premium Showa
front and rear suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can be adjusted for
passenger and luggage weight simply by turning a dial located below the left side of the
seat. Suspension travel is 6.5 inches in front and 6.4 inches at the rear. Ground
clearance is 6.75 inches. The lower center of mass achieved by carrying fuel in the
frame and oil in the swing arm enhance rider confidence off pavement, while limited
unsprung weight helps keep the tires in contact with uneven road surfaces for improved
control. The 17-inch, six-spoke, reinforced cast-aluminum wheels feature a durable rim
design. A dual front fender system provides debris protection for the rider and the bike.
For enhanced comfort, the high, wide handlebar with a cross brace is equipped with
deflectors and a two-piece windscreen designed to limit buffeting. The innovative Triple
Tail system folds through three positions to function as a luggage rack with tie-down
hooks over the rear seat position, as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails, or
as a luggage rack extended over the rear fender. The Ulysses has two 10 amp/12-volt
accessory power outlets (one on the dash, another under the seat) and a large under-
seat storage compartment.
The broad powerband and abundant torque of the 103-hp Buell Firestorm 1203 V-Twin
engine gives the Ulysses the ability to charge through twisty pavement sections or
proceed at lower speeds over uneven, unpaved roads with less gear shifting.

With the 2009 Ulysses XB12X and XB12XT, Buell delivers veritable adventure sportbikes
that are dynamic performers on virtually any kind of terrain. These are two models that
display distinct personalities and allow creative riders to keep the blood flowing by
diversifying the type of rides depending for what kind of adventure they’re in the mood
in every different day of the week.
None of the two bikes will be taken to Dakar or at the track, but they are build to cover
up an infinite number of miles on tarmac, sand, dirt and gravel, while featuring an
absolutely original design.

Introduction
The 2009 Buell Adventure Sportbike line includes two
Ulysses models created for riders seeking a motorcycling
experience beyond the ordinary. While the Ulysses XB12X
and Ulysses XB12XT are designed to perform distinctly
different missions, each offers a combination of comfort,
versatility and performance that make them among the
most dynamic motorcycles on any road today.
2009 Buell Ulysses XB12XT

The Buell Trilogy of Technology – chassis rigidity, mass

centralization, and low unsprung weight – forms the
foundation of both Ulysses models. The hollow aluminum
perimeter frame is the core of a rigid chassis, and doubles
as a 4.4-gallon fuel tank to help lower the center of
gravity. For the same reason, the muffler is located below
the engine, and the Ulysses swingarm is also does double
duty as the oil reservoir. The 103-hp Buell Thunderstorm
1203 V-Twin engine is tuned to deliver a broad powerband
and the on-demand torque a rider can use in the real
world.

An upright riding position, comfortable ergonomics, and

rider-focused features like a two-piece windscreen,
adjustable suspension and heated hand grips, make these
Ulysses models truly multi-function motorcycles, ready for
commuting, touring and back-road exploration. Handling is
intuitive. The performance is thrilling.
2009 Buell Ulysses XB12X

Improved Drive Belt – A new Veyance Hibrex drive belt with

Flexten Plus technology, based on the belt developed for
the Buell 1125R, has increased strength and durability.

Improved Footpegs – New black footpegs have an aggressive

sawtooth pattern for optimal foot stability in all conditions
and riding positions.

New Ulysses Police model – The Ulysses Police XB12XP is

designed for use by government agencies in situations
requiring travel on paved and unpaved roads and the agility
and performance of an adventure sport motorcycle. It is
equipped with police-specific lighting, a larger top case
and more-compact side cases, and other special
equipment.
2009 Buell Ulysses XB12X

With long-travel suspension, generous 6.75-inch ground

clearance, and aggressive Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires, the
Buell Ulysses XB12X can carry its rider over dirt, gravel and
other unpaved road surfaces. On smooth pavement, the
XB12X performs as a high-performance sport motorcycle,
ready to blitz through the twisties.

A wide Supermoto-style handlebar gives the rider extra

leverage and control behind wind deflectors and a two-
piece windscreen designed to limit buffeting. The broad,
torque-filled powerband of the 103-hp Buell Thunderstorm
1203 V-Twin engine gives the Ulysses the ability to proceed
at lower speeds over unpaved roads with less gear shifting,
and the power to bomb down paved backroads.

Premium Showa front (6.51 inches travel) and rear (6.38

inches travel) suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring
preload can be adjusted by turning a dial located below the
left side of the seat. Features that help make the XB12X
adventure-ready include the Triple Tail system, which folds
through three positions to function as a luggage rack with
tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, as a cushioned
passenger backrest with grab rails, or as a luggage rack
extended over the rear fender. Optional top and side cases
are also available for the XB12X as accessory items. A dual
front fender system provides debris protection for the
rider and the bike. The XB12X is offered with Barricade
Orange or Thrust Blue bodywork.
