Training and Experience Evaluation
The California civil service selection system is merit-based and eligibility for
appointment is established through a formal examination process. The
Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Fighter II examination consists
of a Training and Experience evaluation used to evaluate your education,
training, and experience.

This Training and Experience Evaluation is a scored component accounting for


100% of your rating in this examination. It is important to complete the
questionnaire carefully and accurately. Your responses are subject to verification
before appointment to a position.

Instructions:
Using the rating scale(s) provided below, you will rate your experience
performing specific job-related tasks.

Connecting hose to water sources to charge hose lines for fire suppression or

other emergency response activities.
Making forcible entry into structures when necessary to extinguish/suppress

fires and preserve life utilizing hand tools and/or power tools.
Performing daily equipment and safety gear checks (e.g., personal protective

equipment, medical supplies, ladders) in preparation for emergency response.
Carrying, maneuvering, raising, and lowering various types of ladders during

emergency incidents and routine training activities.
Carrying, dragging, and hoisting hose around obstacles, over uneven terrain,
5 up and down stairs, and/or up and down ladders to provide water for
suppression, rescue, and exposure protection.
Identifying, securing, and controlling utilities (e.g., gas, electric, water, special

hazards) as required by incidents to reduce scene hazards.
Extricating patients trapped in vehicles using hydraulic spreading tools, air
7
spreading tools, cuttings tools, and stabilizing tools.
Implementing exposure protection (e.g., attached structures, structures in close

proximity, brush) to reduce risk of fire spread.

Inspecting and cleaning fire apparatus equipment to ensure operability and

Assembling and operating rescue systems (e.g., rope, hardware, gear) to

Ability to recognize the characteristics of fire behavior to ensure firefighter

safety.
Ability to check vital signs of patient to determine circulation and respiration

functionality.
Knowledge of Rescue, Exposure, Confinement, Extinguishment, Overhaul
22 (RECEO) with salvage and ventilation procedures to effectively mitigate
situations.
Ability to perform as part of a fire suppression crew during emergency

incidents and work projects.
