4. The Passive Voice: the passive transformation; classes of verbs that undergo
passivization
5. Infinitival constructions. The distribution of Infinitive Complement Clauses
6. The syntactic structure of the simple sentence
7. Subordination in English: the classification of clauses
8. Finite and non-finite Subject Clauses
9. Lexical relations: synonymy, antonymy, complementarity, hyponymy
10. The theory of speech acts. Constative vs. performative utterances. Felicity conditions.

MODUL II
1. Affixation: general characteristics of prefixation/suffixation; negative prefixes; noun-
forming suffixes, adjective-forming suffixes, verbal suffixes
2. The category of number in English: regular/irregular plurals; countable and uncountable
nouns (classes and subclasses)
3. The category of aspect: the opposition simple vs. progressive aspect; classes of verbs and
the progressive aspect
4. The category of mood. The Indicative Mood vs. the Subjunctive Mood. The forms, uses
and distribution of the subjunctive in contemporary English
5. The transitive and intransitive predication
6. The syntax of negative sentences: the derivation of negative sentences; sentences with
negative quantifiers; polarity items; emphatic negatives
7. The –ING forms. The distribution of the –ING Complement Clauses
8. Finite and non-finite Object Clauses
9. Methods of semantic analysis in structural semantics: componential analysis
10. Deixis: person, place and time deixis

MODUL III
1. Compounding: definition(s); types of compound nouns/adjectives/verbs. The productivity
of the process in Contemporary English
2. Modifiers. Pre-modifiers and post-modifiers. The adjective as pre-modifier; the
comparison of adjectives and adverbs. Other modifiers
3. The category of tense. The uses and values of the Present Tense, Past Tense, Present
Perfect, Past Perfect. Means of Expressing Futurity
4. The use of moods in finite subordinate clauses. Sequence of tenses: rules, exceptions
5. The intransitive and copulative predication
6. Constituents, phrase structure. NP structure rules
7. Relative Clauses: classification. Restrictive vs. Non-Restrictive Relative Clauses. The use
of the relative pronouns. The distribution of the Free Relative Clauses
8. THAT-Complement Clauses. Syntactic properties of THAT Clauses
9. Theories of meaning
10. Conversational implicature: definition, the maxims of conversation, observance and non-
observance cases
