Homework 4

1. If 20MHz of total spectrum is allocated for a duplex wireless cellular system and each
simplex channel has 25 kHz RF bandwidth, find:
a. the number of duplex channels
b. the total number of channels per cell site, if N = 4 cell reuse is used.

Ans:
The number of duplex channels = 20*10 3 / (25*2) = 400
The total number of channels per cell = 400 / 4 = 100

2. Consider four different cellular systems that share the following characteristics. The
frequency bands are 825 to 845 MHz for mobile unit transmission (reverse link) and 870
to 890 MHz fir base station transmission (forward link). A duplex circuit consists of one
30-kHz channel in each direction. The systems are distinguished by the reuse factor,
which is 4, 7, 12, and 19, respectively.
a. Find the number of simultaneous communications that can be supported by a single
cell in each system.
Ans:
Forward channel bandwidth: (890-870) = 20 (MHz)
Reverse channel bandwidth: (845-825) = 20 (MHz)
Each duplex channel 30k *2 = 60 (kHz)
Number of duplex channels for each cell : 20 x 10 3 x 2/ 60 = 667

N = 4: 667/4 = 167
N= 7: 667/7 = 96
N = 12: 667/12 = 56
N = 14: 667/14 = 35

b. Suppose that in each of the systems, the cluster of cells (4, 7, 12, 19) is duplicated 16
times. Find the number of simultaneous communications that can be supported by
each system.

Ans:
667*16 = 10672

c. What is the area covered, in cells, by each system?

Ans:
N=4: 4*16 = 64
N=7: 7*16 = 112
N=12: 12*16 = 192
N=19: 19*16 = 304

d. Suppose the cell size is the same in all four systems and a fixed area of 100 cells is
covered by each system. Find the number of simultaneous communications that can be
supported by each system.

Ans:
N=4: 167*100 = 16700
N=7: 96*100 = 9600
N=12: 56*100 = 5600
N=19: 35*100 = 3500

3. Pretend your company won a license to build a US cellular system (the application cost
for the license was only $500!) Your license is to cover 128 square km. Assume a base
station costs $500,000 and a MSC costs $1,500,000. An extra $500,000 is needed to
advertise and start the business. You have convinced the bank to loan you $6 million,
with the idea that in four years you will have earned $10 million in gross billing
revenues, and will have paid off the loan. (15 points)

(a) How many base stations (i.e., cell sites) will you be able to install for $6 million?
(assuming you need one MSC for all of the base stations)
Ans:
Given loan = $6x10 6 , C bs =$5x10 5 , C ad =$5x10 5 , C MSC =$1.5x10 6
The number of the base stations we are able to install:
load − C MSC − C ad 6 × 10 6 − 1.5 × 10 6 − 5 × 10 5
N= = =8
C bs 5 × 10 5

(b) Assuming the earth is flat and subscribers are uniformly distributed on the
ground, what assumption can you make about the coverage area of each of your cell
sites? Assuming a square mosaic, what is the side of each of each square cell?
Ans:
Given N=8 cells, total coverage area A = 128km 2 ,
Then coverage area of each cell A cell =A / N = 128 / 8 = 16 (Km 2 )
We know A cell = R 2 , then we have
R = 4 (km)

(c) Assume that the average customer will pay $50 per month over a four year
period. Assume that on the first day you turn your system on, you have a certain number
of customers which remains fixed throughout the year. On the first day of each year, the
number of customers using your system doubles and then remains fixed for the rest of
that year. What is the minimum number of customers you must have on the first day of
service in order to have earned $10 million in gross revenues by the end of the 4th year of
operation?
Ans:
For each year, customer will pay P = $50 x 12 = $600
Assume there are M customers on the first day of service, the gross billing
revenues by the end of the 4th year of operation is:
R = (M + 2M + 4M + 8M) x P
= 15 MP = $9x10 3 M
We need R >= $10x10 6 , then 9x10 3 M >= 10x10 6 , M >= 1111.1
Therefore, the minimum number of customer on the first day of service is 1112.

(d) For your answer in (c), how many users per square km are needed on the first day
of service in order to reach the $100 million mark after the 4th year?

Ans:
Number of user per Km 2 is: M/A = 11112/140 = 80 (users/km)
