Human trafficking is a felony of exchanging people for forced labor or sexual activities. ô

 ô

Human trafficking has existed since the ancient times as forms of slavery for the rich people

to enjoy freedom from labor and sexual pleasures. Then, it was stimulated when Western

civilizations started African slave trade (freelegaladvicehelp.com). It has experience a sharp

decline after World War II when the US illegalized prostitution (freelegaladvicehelp.com).

However, human trafficking still remains a major crime in the world as the UN estimates that

2.5 million people from 127 different countries are being trafficked today (UN News Center).

The three major types of human trafficking today are: forced labor, sex trafficking, and child

labor. Forced labor is when a person is threatened with violence or with other forms of

penance. Sex trafficking is when a person is traded for sexual activities. Finally, child labor is

trade of children for labor or sexual abuse.

Human trafficking is affecting our world in various meansmethods today. One form of

labor trafficking is bonded labor, and it is being widely committed around the world without

much notice. Bonded labor is one that forces people in debt to labor, and their work is often

more valuable than the sum of money that they borrowed (Administration for Children &

Families). What͛s even worse than bonded labor is forced labor. Forced labor makes men

perform strenuous works without paying them, yet their work makes $31 billion (IPO). The

fact that human trafficking generates a large portion of the world͛s economy is very immoral.

Also, sex trafficking is a major crime that is committed all around the world. Victims are

usually those in economic or social hardship and those who are in those hardships are

vulnerable to traffickers. The victims may vary from homeless people, ethnically

discriminated people, and runaway teens. Tempting financial support fools most of the

victims, and once they are traded, it is difficulttough and dangerousrisky for them to escape

(Siddhartha Kara). This is also a big issue for the US because 83% of 1,229 human trafficking

cases were found to be sex trafficking cases (Bureau of Justice). The major countries that

trafficked women are destined to are Thailand, Japan, Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands,

Germany, Italy, Turkey and the US (BBC). Child labor and trafficking is another serious world

issue. Today, approximately 215 million children around the world work full-time (IPO). Child

trafficking is often connected with sexual exploitation, and many children are forced to

prostitution and child pornography (The Age). Today, 600,000 to 820,000 people are

trafficking across international borders each year, 80% of which are women and 50% are

minorities (US Department of State).

To solve the issue of human trafficking, some misconceptions must be investigated.

First of all, belief that human trafficking only occurs on poor countries is false. The source

countriesͶcountries that people are trafficked out ofͶare usually deficit, but the

destination countriesͶcountries that trafficked people end up inͶare usually prosperousͶ

like Japan, India, and US (T.E.N. Students). Therefore, it͛s the role of the leading countries of

the world to take step to prevent human trafficking. One action that world leaders should

take is to cooperate with nongovernmental organizations to fight off human trafficking.

Legislations created solely through government decisions may lack proper research to base

the new legislations on, while non-governmental organizations like the Alliance Against

Human Trafficking. The role of non-governmental organizations is to create global awareness

about human trafficking through media like the Internet or television. It is also necessary for

non-governmental organizations to assert the rationales for why human trafficking is wrong

and induce pathos and ethos from the people. Finally, thorough investigation of trafficked

people on national borders is crucial. As supported by data that 600,000 to 820,000 people

are trafficked across national borders (US Department of State), tracking down trade routes

would decrease trafficking activities significantly.
