Tube Skin temperature sensors
Doedijns Instrumentation manufactures various different types of temperature
sensors such as radiant tube skin thermocouples, petrochemical sensors and
thermocouples for refining facilities around the world.
Tube skin thermocouples with a protection-pad accurately measure skin
temperature in fired process furnaces and boilers. The protection-pad
thermocouple is designed to minimize temperature measurement problems
caused by flame impingement and radiant heat.
Correct installation of the skin thermocouples is the most critical factor in
assuring long thermocouple life.
An important fact to remember is that there is not one answer applicable to
all furnaces. Each installation must be given individual consideration to ensure
optimum thermocouple performance.
For each application we have different types of measurement design,
like V-pad, Weld-pad or other constructions with or without protection-pad.
The materials which can be used, are depending on the process conditions.
Materials such as SS310, SS446, Hastelloy or HR160 are available as a
protection sheath of the thermocouple.
Keeping the thermocouple sheath in intimate contact with the tube and
routing it on it’s coolest side, is of paramount importance because it allows
the thermocouple to utilize the process tube as a heat sink. Furnace tubes
reaching process temperature will move a substantial distance (50 to 350 mm
is typical). Such movement will destroy the thermocouple if no compensation is
provided such as the recommended expansion loops. They are required for a
optimal lifetime of the thermocouples and can help reduce commissioning and
maintenance problems.

The construction
Our range of temperature sensors is made from mineral insulated materials
with different types of sheath materials which are depending on the
application. The sheath can be protected with another extra outer sheath, for
example a fiber frax sleeve.
Furthermore constructions can be supplied with a double outer sheath of
2 different types of materials depending on your process requirements.
We are able to help and advice you on all your installation applications,
including how to weld the Weld-pad on the process pipe/tube.
The base material is bendable. This means that this design is ideal for
applications where tube movement is greater than 75 mm (3”).
Diameters are available from 3,2 mm (1/8”), 4,8 mm (3/16”), 6,4 mm (1/4”),
8 mm (5/16”), 9,5 mm (3/8”) and 12,7 mm (1/2”).
A construction which is longer than 1,000 mm will be supplied with weld clamps.
