education, shelter and supportive services.

Vision We envision a diverse and healthy society free from domestic and sexual
violence. As a vital nonprofit organization, we provide dynamic and comprehensive
services to help people build safe lives.

This coming year, we will recognize our 20th year of working to further our mission and realize our vision
of a diverse and healthy society free from domestic and sexual violence. Throughout the past 20 years and
into the future, the following remains true: awareness and prevention education are critical to rebuilding
safe lives and to ending the devastating cycle of abuse.

This Annual Report highlights the widespread and profound impact of your investment in The Advocates
during our fiscal year ending June 30, 2010. The Advocates’ staff and board are able to remain deeply
committed to changing lives because of the consistently generous support received each year from you
in the form of thousands of volunteer hours, in-kind goods and services, and financial contributions.

Last year, your donations supported a wide variety of life-changing services to 348 women and 92 children
over 11,667 times. Your gifts enabled the education of 1,946 students from kindergarten through grade 12
by going into the classroom and talking candidly about domestic violence and creating healthy relationships.
These are just a few examples of what you have made possible.

Walk the Walk: Could you walk in a domestic violence victim’s shoes?
Close to 100 community members participate in Walk the Walk every October during Domestic Violence
Awareness Month to build awareness of family violence prevention and the creation of healthy relationships.

Volunteers plant the seeds of change!

In 2009 – 2010, 140 outstanding volunteers contributed 4,024 hours of service, valued at $81,486 ($20.25/hr)
to further The Advocates’ work. We greatly appreciate each and every volunteer for sharing her or his time and
talents. Special thanks to Anne and Scott Mason, owners of Ketchum Grill, for graciously hosting the 8th Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in September, and to guest speaker R.L. Rowsey.

Jackson Katz, an engaging presentation on violence prevention

In November, The Advocates brought Jackson Katz, a leading anti-sexist male activist in the United States,
to the Wood River Valley. Community members attended two free community events sponsored by Richard
and Judith Smooke, Chris and Margaret Block, and funded in part by a STOP Violence Against Women Act
Grant. Katz illustrated how the sports culture, comedy, advertising, and other media contribute to gender
violence and the positive role of adult male leadership. Check out his “10 Things Men Can Do to Prevent

Stimulus funds at work to help end family violence
In January, The Advocates was awarded a $43,000, two-year grant from the Services, Training, Officers, and
Prosecutors (STOP) Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program. This grant was provided through the
Idaho State Police and funded by The Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Advocates applied these
funds towards an existing bilingual shelter staff position and the hiring of two part-time staff to lead support
groups for women in Shoshone.

Hop Porter Park, Hailey. The number of 2010 race entries doubled over 2009, to reach 70. Nearly 100 people

Economic Education Program Provides Opportunities

Over the last year, 24 women took advantage of The Advocates’ new program, Realizing Your Economic Action
Plan (REAP). The program received start-up funding from the Wood River Women’s Charitable Foundation,
the Deer Creek Fund, and private donations. After completing the 12-hour class series, two-thirds of these women
opened matched savings accounts to help them realize one of the following personal goals: purchase reliable
transportation, pursue additional education, start a business, buy a home, or save for retirement. Through personal
savings and matched deposits, over $6,000 has been saved to date!

Participants reported that the program helped them with increased self-esteem, self confidence, and general well
being. “I watched women blossom as they learned about credit and the role of money in our society. Knowledge
is power,” stated Carol Pintler, client services coordinator. The program provides many women with education and
money that they might otherwise never be able to access or obtain.

The Advocates’ 4th Annual Golf
Tournament raised $20,000
Sixty-four golfers braved winter weather in May to play in
the tournament at The Valley Club. Players tried their luck
at miracle putts and tee prizes, and enjoyed a dry, warm
post-game Summer Safari party inside. Special thanks to
our sponsors Dick’s Sporting Goods, Joe’s Backhoe Service
and Quigley Canyon, our 19 hole sponsors, event host The
Valley Club, players, volunteers and the many individuals and
companies that provided wonderful prizes. Golf Tournament
organizers included Janet and Pete Cantor, Rick Davis, and
Gundl and John Haskell, and Joanne and Dick Wetherell.
The Advocates’ Gala Raises $200,000
More than 200 patrons attended The Advocates’ Annual
Gala: Black & White Soiree in June. Held on the grounds
of Trail Creek Cabin, the evening featured black and white
décor accented with purple orchid centerpieces by Kurt
McAuley of Botanica. Guests mingled, dined and danced
to The Sensations, and bid on an impressive assortment
of live and silent auction items. Mark your calendar for

The Advocates’ Attic Thrift Store
The Attic raised 17% of The Advocates’ operating budget
in 2009-2010. In addition, over $11,000 worth of clothing
and household items were provided free to families in
the community due to donations to The Advocates’ Attic.
Managed by Gary Schott, The Attic features ever-changing
merchandise and is full of unexpected treasures! The Attic
sells used furniture, clothing, household items, toys, and
much more. Donations can be dropped off at the store. We
can pick up furniture and other sizeable donations in good
