Felted Toddler Slippers

Materials:
1 Ball of worsted weight wool for felting. (2 strands throughout) 286 yds.
1 Ball of Novelty yarn 57 yds. (Optional)
2 sts Markers
Needles: 4 Double points (us) size 11
Tapestry needle
Gauge: 13 sts and 18 rows = 4” stockinet stitch
Toddler shoe size = 1-8; Foot Length = 31/2”- 6”
Cuff:
Cast on 32 sts.
Knit 12 or 20 rounds. (12 rounds for shorter cuff or 20 rounds for taller cuff). With novelty yarn and 1 strand wool knit 6 rounds
for shorter top. Cut novelty yarn add 1 strand wool you will work with 2 strands for the next 6 rounds total 12 rounds. Taller cuff
work 10 rounds with novelty yarn cut and add 1 strand wool, work with 2 strands for the next 10 rounds total 20 rounds.
Heel Flap: Knit 16 sts for heel flap and reserve 16 sts for instep.
Row 1: Purl Row 7: Purl
Row 2: Knit Row 8: Knit
Row 3: Purl Row 9: Purl
Row 4: Knit Row 10: Knit
Row 5: Purl Row 11: Purl
Row 6: Knit Row 12: Knit
Turning Heel:
Row 1: Slip 1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 2: Slip 1, k3, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 3: Slip 1, p4, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: Slip 1, k5, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 5: Slip 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 6: Slip 1, k7, ssk, k1. (10sts)
Work one more st each row until 10 sts remain.
Gussets:
Pick up and knit 8 gusset sts along left side of heel flap. Place marker. Knit across the instep sts. Place marker. Pick up and knit
8 gusset sts along the right side of the heel flap. Move 1 stitch each side of instep to hold markers in place.
Gusset decreases:
Rnd 1: Knit to 2 sts. Before first marker, k2tog, knit to second marker, slip marker, ssk, knit to end.
Rnd 2: repeat rnd 1:
Rnd 3: Knit around.
Rnd 4: repeat rnd 1.
Rnd 5: Knit around.
Rnd 6: repeat rnd 1.
Rnd 7: Knit around.
Rnd 8: repeat rnd 1. (32sts remain)
Work even until foot measure 1/2” more than the desired finished foot length.
Shape Toe:
Rnd 1: Knit to 3 sts before first marker, k2tog,k1 slip marker, ssk, knit to 3 sts before second marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker, ssk,
knit to end.
Rnd 2: knit around.
Repeat rnd 1 and 2 until 12sts remain after shaping toe. (6 sts on each of 2 needles.)
Rnd 3: knit around removing markers. Kitchener Closed.
Felting: Set washer to load size small and fill with hot water. Add a small amount of mild soap. Place slippers in mesh bag and
toss in with a few pairs of jeans. Agitate, check every 5 mins. When slippers are the desired density and correct foot length has
been reached, remove slippers and rinse thoroughly in cool water. (Do Not Run Through The Spin Cycle.) Roll in a towel to
remove as much excess water as possible. Shape with your hands and allow to dry completely. Slippers can be firmly stuffed
with plastic bags to help with shaping.
