he flagstone-paved entry of this adobe home in Las Campanas is framed by
a pair of tall, stone walls shaded by aspens and Scotch pines. Double doors
open to a flagstone courtyard featuring a lively waterfall/stream feature and,
close against the house, a sitting area with a built-in Dacor grill. Entering the front doors
of the house, the visitor finds himself at the head of a long gallery with entrances to rooms
along both sides. Straight ahead is a sunny seating area.
The spacious living room is graced with a high, beamed ceiling; a stone-tile floor; and
lots of windows and glazed doors looking out to a wraparound portal. The big fireplace is
simply a rectangular firebox between two long slabs of sandstone: the mantel and hearth.
Here, as in most of the house, the walls are beautifully hand-plastered.
The 7,575-square-foot dwelling, built in 2003, benefits from design by Ted Turner of
Turner Lechner & Romero. The property of 2.35 acres also holds a guest casita measuring
1,163 square feet.
In the middle of the house is the dining room. The first thing you notice is the very
distinctive cofferred ceiling, each of the 20 beamed squares in its division framing a
decorated-tin dome with a light in its center. Also special here are earthen walls, a corner
fireplace, and a beautifully glossy wood floor.
The adjacent kitchen has practical, handsome stone floors. The large island is topped
with wood, while surrounding countertops are steel. A modernistic splash wall of gray
glass bricks rests behind the Viking range, with Viking ovens below. The cabinetry is
natural wood, the uppers with fluted-glass doors, and the Sub Zero refrigerator is paneled
with wood.
Adjacent to the kitchen is an informal dining area with large windows onto the
courtyard, and a corner fireplace.
The master bedroom sports wood floors, a cabineted entertainment center, and a
fireplace similar in design to that in the living room, but smaller. The thick adobe walls
provide a nice, deep window seat here.
His and hers sections in the master bathroom both have walk-in showers, and
washbasins set in broad, polished-travertine countertops on 6-drawered vanities of blond
wood. Hers also has a deep spa tub with views, through near trees, of the Sunset Golf
Course fairway.
In the private guest wing are two bedrooms with en-suite baths.
The rangy portal has a roof of corrugated metal and a focal point for gatherings on cool
evenings: a feature fireplace made of moss rock.
The property, located at 150 Paseo Aragon, is listed by Marion Skubi and Johnnie
Gillespie, Sotheby’s International Realty, for $2.8 million.
