‘Let’s do something’
Matshaile Senior Secondary School in Kgautswane
(Rietfontein) near Ohrigstad, did not fare very well
during last year’s matric examinations.
In fact, the school achieved a zero pass rate. That
is not all. The Leboeng Police, under which
Kgautswane resorts, are very worried. Says captain
Solomon Moholane (photograpgh), the station
commander: “We arrested a number of these kids in
2010 for breaking into the school and stealing their
own computers. The MEC of Safety and Security in
Limpopo is very worried about this state of affairs. That
is why we are here today. It is part of the Safer
Schools project. We as a community as a whole must
make an effort to do something at the school, to
establish the right climate for proper education.”
So on Wednesday morning this week,
representatives from the whole community were
present when the project was launched at the school.
Traditional leaders, clergy, political parties, youth
organisations, teachers and pupils, members of
governing bodies and the Police were gathered under
‘n large tent erected between two blocks of
classrooms. Those not so much interested (on the
front page) at the back of the building also tried to
catch a glimpse of the action every now and then when
not reading or trying to cut the grass.

Captain Moholane told Platinum Gazette that part of
the problem seems to be that pupils are not interested in
getting an education. “They leave after break, not to
return. Without learners in the school, the teachers also
go home. Some of the children go to taverns in the
vicinity.
That is why we have the tavern owners also here
today. They must know they break the law and can be
harshly punished when selling alcohol to minors.”
Leboeng Police station communication officers told
Platinum Gazette that schools in villages falling under
Leboeng Police Station are regularly broken in to, and
computers stolen, but never, except in the case of this
school, have learners been arrested.”
Captain Moholane announced during the launch of
the project that the Leboeng Police is adopting the
Grade 12s of the school. “We will come and talk to them
in their Life Orientation periods. I will personally also
make unannounced visits to the school to see whether
they are in class. Throughout the project the Police will
implement crime prevention programmes at the school.
It is in the community’s interest that we all work together
to make this a school to be proud of.” Other speakers,
also from the ANCYL, told the learners that they have no
future without an education and that they should make
good use of their opportunities.

A pre-school in Dresden village,

way to Ohrigstad, was burnt to
the ground in the early hours of
last week friday morning. The
owner and principal, Mrs Monica

when it was still dark, a group of
people allegedly threw paper and

school. Bystandrs said they need
another pre-school as will also
help when the river is full and
parents cannot get their children
to the other pre-school. The case
was reported to the Police. At the
time the newspaper visited the
scene Mrs Hkalata Phaswane
was still waiting for the Police who
said they were to return with
sniffer dogs.

Nkwe Platinum Limited, trading on the Australian stock
All together exchange, but focused in South Africa, says it is positive
about the prospects of its projects in South Africa near
Burgersfort.
Nkwe voluntary halted trading on the Australian
bourse after Genorah resources, a company in wich it
has a 64 percent stake, lost a Constitutional Court case
now - Nkwe against the Bengwenyama community about the
prospecting rights on two farms near Burgersfort. The
two farms forms part of Nkwe’s Tubatse project. After
the court case, another community, the Roka-Pasha
claimed the court was misled as they had more right to
positive the land than the Bengwenyama, syaing that they will
go to court with the issue.
Updating the market towrds the end of last week,
Mr Peter Landau, Executive Director of Nkwe
announced that Nkwe confirms its stated position with
regards to its ability to retain and develop its interests
about in both the Garatau and Tubatse projects, saying it is
the intention of Nkwe to seek to request its shares
recommence trading on the Australian stock exchange
this week. His statement reads: “Further to previous
announcements, the following information is provided

to clarify some uncertainty created by the South African
Constitutional Court decision regarding the farms Eerste
Geluk 327KT and Nooitverwacht 324KT and the
potential impact involving reports that Anglo Platinum
and the Modikwa JV had commenced review
proceedings involving 9 farms (including the 5 in which
rights Nkwe has an interest).
The Roka Phasha and Bengwenyama communities
have made joint applications together with Genorah as
the economic partner for the re awarding of the rights
on both Eerste Geluk and Nooitverwacht farms. In
Nkwe’s opinion, both communities who made the joint
applications represent all relevant community interests
on the two farms combined. The fact that both
communities with Genorah have made the relevant

application is significant in so far as a united show of co
operation to assist the DMR in fast tracking the application
and avoiding any prolonged uncertainty caused by the
Constitutional Court decision.
Nkwe has back to back arrangements with Genorah
to ensure that its 64% interest in the two farms will be
retained.
The South African Department of Mineral Resources
(“DMR”) has established a special working party of all
relevant Government Departments involved in the
approval process for the awarding of the rights to fast
track the application process with an award expected
within the shortest possible period, mindful of the impact
continued uncertainty has on the market.
Nkwe has been made aware (given that neither Nkwe
or Genorah are part of the process) that Anglo Platinum
Limited has instigated an administrative process by
applying to the DMR and through PAJA (Administrative
Justice Act) by the Modikwa JV for a review on the 9
farms called the Modikwa deeps. This includes the 5 farms
that comprise Nkwe’s Garatau and Tubatse Projects.
From Nkwe’s perspective the matter in respect of
Nkwe’s 5 farms was settled in February 2008 (joint
release 13 February 2008) with an agreement made
between Anglo Platinum, African Rainbow Minerals,
Genorah Resources, Nkwe Platinum and the DMR.
Further from Nkwe’s perspective, the DMR and PAJA
reviews instigated by Anglo Platinum and the Modikwa
JV respectively have been utilised to reserve Anglo’s
rights and potentially look at other remedies available
from the DMR outside of challenging the original award
of the 5 farms to Genorah given the settlement agreement
reached in February 2008.
The Company understands the uncertainty caused
by recent events and is confident that the information
released will alleviate a significant amount of the
uncertainty that currently exists amongst shareholders
and allow Nkwe to focus on delivering its ultimate goal.”

Big plans for hawker stalls in town

The Tubatse Hawkers Association held a meeting this week where
various issues regarding the hawkers in Burgersfort were discussed.
These informal traders had good December and is still in the process
of issueing permits for the regulation of trading as decided by Council
last year. The issueing of permits will continue until the end of
February and policing of valid permits will start in March 2011.
The Burgersfort Cluster of the Association will have a meeting with
various stakeholders on Monday next week. The meeting will resolve
around the hawker stalls to be build at Twin City.
The committee has also drawn up plans for development of hawker
stalls on the open area stretching between the stop street at Toyota
and Cheap Cheap on the other end. They’ve already approached
mines in the area and has possibly secured funding for the
construction. The mines and the municipality will negotiate regarding
the land were these stalls are to be build.

development and training programmes, and is
proud to congratulate the successful candidates
who participated in the initiatives. These

ABET: “Our ABET centre assisted employees
to improve their education levels which will
improve their future prospects. Last year the
centre had more than 160 part time students
enrolled. The ABET Centre has relocated to a
site which will be more accessible for the
employees and local community and both
employees and the community are encouraged
to register for 2011 enrollment.
Career Expo: “Modikwa Platinum Mine hosted
a career expo in conjunction with other Eastern
Limb mines for the local schools in the vicinity
and was attended by 3200 pupils exposing
them to all occupations available on the mine.

Grade 8 is fun at Calvin College

The grade 8 pupils at Calvin College are going
through an orientation period of two weeks.
During these weeks they are wearing self-
made yellow wigs, a board with their ID
numbers, name, school and grade on it. They
also carry a heacache tablet as they are still
giving the rest of the school ‘headaches’.
They are also wearing self made tails, many
which resemble that of a lion. They also each
have a ‘pet’ egg. This egg (photo below) must
be carried with them every day and must have
a name, occupation etc. The group every
morning sings for the Blue Crane statuette in
front of the school and will next week write a
test on the school’s code of conduct. They
will also be going on a camping trip to
celebrate the start of their high school career.

How much should government

Draft legislation open for public inspection
and comment can change the employment
landscape in South Africa dramatically.
The legislation, should it go through, will give
government the power to determine the
increase in wage for domestic workers and
farm workers. In the past it has happened
that when these workers are paid more than
the minimum wage, they either do not
receive an increase or it is far below the
recommended percentage.
Other major changes are that it will be illegal
to strike over a dispute. It will include alleged
unfair dismissal that could be resolved by die
Labour Court or CCMA.

with government and they will not be allowed
to charge for finding their clients
