The Test of English as a Foreign Language

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose

native language is not English. This requirement is waived only for applicants who will
have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at
Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction.
Scores from this examination must be "released" to Yale University Graduate School
of Arts & Sciences (code 3987). Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to
other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used.

If you are applying to a Ph.D. program associated with the Schools of Forestry &
Environmental Studies, Epidemiology & Public Health, Nursing or Management, you
must send your scores to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (code 3987) and not
to the individual Schools which have separate codes for applicants applying to
professional degree programs (e.g., MF, MPH, MSN and MBA degree programs).

English Language Proficiency Test Scores (for international applicants)

Much of your success in graduate study in the United States will rest on your ability to
understand, read, write, and speak English. If English is not your native language,
evidence of proficiency in its use will be decisive in the review of your application for
admission.

The Duke University Graduate School requires that any applicant whose first language is
not English submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The
applicant will be exempt from this requirement if they have studied full-time for two or
more years at a college or university where English is the language of instruction. The
institution code for Duke is 5156 (a departmental code is not needed). Your score must
not be more than two years old, and an official copy must be sent to the Graduate School
directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Personal copies are not acceptable,
nor are "attested" or notarized copies.

The Graduate School seeks to admit only those students with a minimum TOEFL
score of 83 (internet-based test). In many departments, a higher score may be
required.

NOTE: All international students whose first language is not English are required to take
oral and written English placement exams administered by the English for International
Students program. (These exams are independent of the TOEFL score submission
requirement.) Depending on their exam results, students are either exempt from, or
placed into, one or more EIS courses. Students with EIS requirements must make
satisfactory progress toward completing these requirements in their first year of study.

Universities' Scores
Colleges and Universities that use TOEFL scores for student admissions have
begun to set their TOEFL iBT score requirements. These initial score standards
will be reviewed by the institutions after the first year of testing. A number of
institutions plan to set section or skill score requirements either by themselves or
in conjunction with the whole score, at the same time as others plan to set a total
score standard in order to make best use of the score information.

The TOEFL iBT score scale is:
