Civil aviation is one of two major categories of flying, representing all non-military
aviation, both private and commercial.

Civil aviation includes two major categories:

1) Scheduled air transport which include all passenger and cargo flights operating

on regularly-scheduled routes; and

2) General aviation which include all other civil flights, private or commercial.

Scheduled air transport refers to an airline that provides transport services for
passengers or freight. Airlines usually own their aircraft with which they supply these
services. Sometimes they may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for
mutual benefit. Generally, airline companies are recognized with an air operating
certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body.

Airline services can be categorized as being intercontinental, intra-continental, domestic,

or international, and may be operated as scheduled services or charters.

Any discussion about aviation would be incomplete without mentioning those planes
which set the standard in the aviation industry.

Ryanair is a low cost airline which currently is the largest in the world in terms of
international passenger numbers. It carries about 22 million passengers annually.

FedEx Express is a cargo airline based in the United States. It is the world's largest airline
in terms of freight tons flown and the world's second largest in terms of fleet size. It
delivers packages and freight to more than 375 destinations in nearly every country each
day.

The Antonov An-225 is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft and is the heaviest aircraft ever
built. Due to the unique size of its cargo deck, it has the ability to carry over-sized
payloads. When empty it weighs an impressive 285 tons and it can carry a maximum
cargo weight of 250 tons. It is interesting to note that only one such aircraft has ever been
built.

And as of 2010, Airbus and Boeing are the largest manufacturers of civil transport
aircraft in the world. The Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 rank among the best selling
airline models of the decade. These models are renowned for their performance and the
comfort they offer to the passengers. They have revolutionized the transport sector by
providing an unparalleled flying experience to people, no matter in class of service they
are seated in.

General aviation (GA) is the 2nd category of civil aviation. It refers to all flights other
than military and scheduled airline and regular cargo flights, both private and
commercial. General aviation flights range from gliders and powered parachutes to large,
non-scheduled cargo jet flights.

General aviation covers a large range of activities, both commercial and non-commercial,
including private flying, flight training, air ambulance, police aircraft, traffic reporting,
aerial firefighting, air charter, gliding, skydiving, and many others.

With this description ends our discussion of civil aviation.

I would like now to invite my friend Sairally to talk about one extremely important
human component of aviation; the cabin crew.
