Guidelines for Preparation of Dissertation/Thesis and Evaluation

PREAMBLE:

A project is one of the very important components of any Postgraduate level program. As
a partial fulfillment of the requirements of Advanced Postgraduate Program (APGP) of
the International Institute of Information Technology, Pune, a thesis is to be submitted in
accordance with the following guidelines. Attention must be paid to the content of the
thesis/report and to the standard format as prescribed. Three hardbound copies of thesis
with all necessary signatures/seal and a CD containing soft copies of full content of thesis
should be submitted to the Controller of Examinations, fifteen days prior to the end of
project semester (For mini-project, one hard copy is to be submitted and spiral binding is
acceptable). Failing to submit in stipulated deadlines, a student has to re-register for the
project.

1. ORGANISATION OF THE THESIS/REPORT:

This thesis/report shall be presented in a number of Chapters, starting with Introduction


and ending with Conclusion. Each of the other chapters will have precise title reflecting
the contents of the chapter. A chapter can be subdivided into sections, sub-sections and
sub-sub-sections so as to present the content discretely and with due emphasis.

1.1 Introduction:

The title of Chapter 1 shall be Introduction. It shall give an overview of the fundamentals,
present scenario of various technologies/methodologies concern with the theme of
project, comparisons, drawbacks, objectives, brief description about the content
incorporated in the thesis including significant contributions from the investigation. The
length of this chapter should be between three to five pages.

1.2 Review of Literature:

This shall normally form the Chapter 2 and should have multiple chapters for review and
shall present a detailed study of the previous work published in the literature along with
the present scenario pertaining to the topic of the investigation. Recommended number of
chapters for review are two to four with minimum of ten pages each.

1.3 Details of Investigations done by the Researcher:

The reporting on the investigation shall be the presented in two to four chapters with
appropriate chapter titles. Due importance shall be given to procedures adopted and
techniques developed, methodologies developed and adopted. While important
derivations/formulas should normally be presented in the text of these chapters, extensive
and long treatments and information, detailed results in tabular and graphical forms may
be presented in Appendices. Figures and tables should be presented immediately
following their first mention in the text. Short tables and figures (say, less than half the

writing area of the page) should be presented within the text, while large table and figures
may be presented in separate pages. All the figures and tables must be serially numbered,
captioned, and cited in the body text. Equations should form separate lines with
appropriate paragraph separation above and below the equation line, with equation
numbers aligned to the right. All the equations must be written by using Microsoft
Equation Editor (In MS Word, go to Insert –Object - Select Equation Editor - OK)

1.4 Results, Discussions, and Conclusions:

This shall form the final chapter of the thesis and shall include a thorough evaluation of
the investigation carried out and bring out the contributions from the study. The
discussion shall logically lead to inferences and conclusions as well as scope for possible
further future work. Conclusions derived from the logical analysis shall be presented and
clearly enumerated, each point stated separately.

1.5 Appendix:

Detailed information, data sheets/specimens, lengthy derivations etc. are to be presented


in the separate appendices, which shall be numbered in Roman Capitals (E.g. “Appendix
IV”).

1.6 Literature Cited/References Used:

This should follow the Appendices, if any, otherwise the last chapter. The candidates
shall follow the IEEE style of citation only.

1.7 Publications by the Candidate:

Articles, technical notes etc. on the topic of the thesis published by the candidate may be
separately listed after the literature cited. This may also be included in the Contents. The
candidates may also include reprints of his/ her publications after the literature citation.

2. THESIS FORMAT:

The thesis shall be printed or xeroxed on white bond paper on one side of the paper only.
However, for mini project reports, student can use ordinary white papers. The text shall
be printed employing Laserjet or Inkjet printer, the text having been processed using a
standard text processor.

2.1 Details of fonts/styles to be used and others are as below:

• The size of the paper shall be standard A4: height 297 mm, width 210 mm.
• The standard font shall be Times New Roman with one and a half line spacing.
• Title of the Chapter: Normal, Font 16, Bold in Title Case
• Main Headings: Normal Font 14, Bold Capital
• Subsection Headings: Normal Font 12, Bold Title Case
• Paragraphs: Only whenever required, No tabs for paragraphs.
• No Header, No Footer
• Page Margin: Top/Bottom/Right: one inch, left: one and a half each
• Do not add blank pages. Avoid blank spaces, too many paragraphs, and too many
bulleted points.
• Body Text: Font 12 (Times New Roman, no italics, no underlines), No border.
However, one can use italic/underlines to emphasize a particular terminology.
• Figure Captions: Font 10 normal (Figures must be cited in the body text. Put the
figures at the relevant places)
• References: Font 10 normal, only in IEEE format
• Pages should serially numbered at right bottom corner of each page starting from
Chapter 1.
• Figures should be like: the fourth figure in Chapter 5 will bear the number Figure 5.4
or Fig.5.4

2.2 Binding:

The thesis shall be hard cover bound with the following colour specification:

• APGP Software Technologies Navy Blue


• APGP Networking and Telecommunications Maroon
• APGP Microelectronics and VLSI Design Grey
• APGP Embedded Systems Design Silver
• APGP (BM, ITM, TM, BTM, OGM) Black
• All other programs Red

However, for mini project report, spiral binding is acceptable.

2.3 Front Covers:

The front cover shall contain the following details:

• Full title of thesis in 22 point’s size font properly centered and positioned at the top in
title case.
• Full name of the candidate in 15 point’s size font properly centered at the middle of
the page.
• Ι2ΙΤ logo followed by the name of the Department, name of the Institute and the year
of submission, each in a separate line and properly centered and located at the bottom
of the page.
• All lettering shall be embossed.
• Program name, title of the thesis and the year of submission shall also be embossed on
the bound (side).

2.4 CD Contents:

A CD containing soft copies of full content of thesis should be submitted along with the
hard copies of thesis. Thesis without a CD as well as a thesis with a CD without full
content will not be accepted in any case. A candidate must print/write (by permanent ink
marker) on a CD the details such as the short title of thesis, name of the student, course,
batch etc.

2.5 Dedication sheet:

If the candidate so desires he/she may dedicate his/her thesis, which statement shall
follow the title page.

2.6 Acknowledgments/Preface:

The acknowledgments by the candidate shall follow by declaration stating the work
presented in the thesis entitled “_____________” is a result of investigation carried out
by the candidate and it should be signed by him/her, with date.

2.7 Certificate:

Certificate should be in the format as given at the end of this document.

2.8 Abstract/List of Figures/List of Tables:

The 200-word abstract is to be written to highlight the important features of the thesis.
Figures as well as Tables shown in thesis should be enlisted at the start of thesis on the
separate pages.

2.9 Table of Contents:

Index for Chapters, section, subsections is to be prepared in standard way. Following


Table of Contents will give the idea about the sequence and style to be used.

Evaluation Model for Projects:

Project will be evaluated on following criteria tentatively. Maximum mark allocated will be 600
for all projects. Separate credits are allocated to the following assessment parameters. If a student
get “D’ grade in any of the parameter and/or GPA of project semester is less than 3, the project
will be rejected and a student will be treated as failed in the project semester.
