So you’ve scheduled your mix with City Lights Sound, now what? First, the most important requirement to a successful, high quality
and time efficient mix is good communication with the mixer. They need to know a bit about your project before they start to work.
In order to make the experience painless and efficient, and give you the most time to work with the mixer, you’ll need to prep your
materials to meet the following specs. All materials should be delivered at least 12 hours before your mix session.
REFERENCE TAPE
You must deliver a Beta SP or DigiBeta of your locked picture along with the OMF. This reference tape should meet the Networks
required delivery specs. These specs generally include:
Bars
Slate that indicates the show name etc…
Countdown
Stereo Mix (for reference only)
AUDIO TRACKS FOR OUTPUT
Before outputting your OMF, the editor should take a pass through the project and make sure audio tracks are assigned in the
following way. Be sure that tracks are assigned correctly, as errors in the OMF can lead to QC problems in the final master and DA-
88.
Track 1 thru 4 Dialogue and VO (Voice-over should always be on track 4)
Track 5 & 6 Music
Track 7 & 8 Sound Effects
Track 9 & Up Additional tracks as necessary. Please include a note if you are delivering additional tracks.
OMF
OMF 2 with Embedded Media
Use 60 frame handles
Place room tone as a muted track at the beginning of each scene where available. Very important!
Deliver OMF as:
o DVD-ROM (preferred)
o CD-ROM
o Firewire drive (the kind that doesn’t need a power supply)
FINAL MASTERS
The sound mixer will ideally lay back to your final masters, which will then be cloned for delivery. Therefore, the sound mixer needs
all of your final masters including:
Final Texted Master on DigiBeta
Final Textless Master on DigiBeta
Any other required Masters on DigiBeta
If you prepare well, you’ll have a wonderful and pleasant sound mixing experience. Sound good? I bet it does!
