Home Reading Program:
The Grade One students will begin their home
reading program this month. Your child may bring
home a book, vocabulary list, or other print material,
and is asked to read to someone at home nightly. Your
child may have to work on the same reading material
over the course of several evenings in order to
achieve fluency.
Parents are asked to initial beside each title on the
accompanying tracking sheet when the text can be
read independently at home. Your child should then
bring the reading package back to school (including
the tracking sheet) and, following a reading
conference with the teacher, will exchange it for new
material to take home.
In order to protect these shared materials, please
help your child remember to keep their reading text
in the plastic page protector in his/her reading
duotang when not in use. This duotang should also be
transported to and from school inside your child’s
pochette.
Library Exchanges:
Students will continue to go to the library once each
week to select a French book, and once every second
week to use the computers. We will begin to put more
emphasis on each child’s selection of a book at his/her
correct reading level. Students are asked to return
their library book prior to their next scheduled
library visit.
Subjects:
Language:
New vocabulary will continue to be introduced and
explored in class each week. In November, we will
also build on our instruction of phonetic reading
strategies through the use of La phonétique animée
and Lire en criant ciseaux - two language programs
based on sounds, syllables, and sight vocabulary.
These programs include listening and vocabulary
activities that aid in the development of oral and
listening skills.
Now that our printing practice is almost complete,
the students will continue to copy and complete
modelled journal entries several times weekly, working
towards daily. Entries begin with the date and focus
on topics of study and discussion in class. This shared
Mathematics:
The Grade One students are in the process of
completing a unit about number concepts and problem-
solving, and will continue to review counting and
recognizing numbers in and out of sequence, up to 100,
until Christmas. In the month of November, we will
collect and sort data in order to look for trends (e.g.
which group has more/less), and will begin to explore 2-D
shapes and 3-D solids, differentiating them by their
attributes.
Science:
We continue to review the basic needs of living things
to be healthy and the function of the body parts in order
to attain these. We have already been studying the
importance of the Five Senses in meeting our needs and
keeping us safe, and are looking forward to the Scientist
in the School workshop - in Mme Jacquie’s class on
Thursday, November 4th (8:20-11:05 am). Upon
completion of our Senses unit, we will return to studying
the reliance of animals on movement to meet their needs.
** Some classes still require volunteers for the
Scientist in the School workshop – if you can help,
please let your child’s teacher know ASAP!**
Social Studies with Mme Julie/Mme Hill:
In Social Studies this month, students will continue to
discuss the people who work in the school as well as their
responsibilities, and will begin to explore the
relationships they have with family members.
