Problem 1)
For Problem One, we followed step by step instructions in the lab handout to model the
upper right quadrant of a rectangular plate with a circular hole at its center. The radius of our
circle was 0.150 mm, the only value unique to our analysis. From our ANSYS results (Figure 1),
we did the hand calculations shown below to obtain values for K and r/d, which we then
compared to Figure 2.64 shown on the following page. Our results, K= 2.083 and r/d= 1.50, are
not directly readable from Figure 2.64, which only has r/d values as large as 0.7, but were the
graph to continue to r/d= 1.50 it appears that the K value would, in fact, equal around 2.083.

For Problem Two, we modeled a cantilever beam of length 18 ft (value unique to our
analysis) with a W8 x 40 cross-sectional area. We did an ANSYS analysis to find the deflection
(0.1587 in) at the unsupported end of the beam (node 9). We then confirmed this value by doing
the sample calculation shown below. We then examined etlist, mplist, plist, nlist, elist, dlist, and
flist (all shown on the following pages) to further check our model.
