achieved through achievement of target and goals, by the
involvement of all individual members. It is also the process of the
dividing and combining activities of an enterprise. So that it
achieves the organizational objectives.

Managers plays an important role in the organization like decision

making allocation of the resources, direction of the activities etc..
Thus it is necessary for a management student to understand and
study an organization through a training program in a real
industrial setup.

CHAPTER TWO
PROFILE
INDUSTRIAL PROFILE

Instrumentation industry is the industry which controls all the

operations of the various plants like chemicals, nuclear plants etc.
India’s lagging behind in scientific instrumentation production
primarily because of the lack of inter disciplinary work and culture
as well as poor interaction between industry, academia and
research and development (R&D) institute. The R&D achievement
of the India in space, defence and atomic energy has not acted as
a catalyst in the growth of Indian instrumentation industry. Even
through there is a Rs. 5300 crore scientific instrumentation
production industry in India, it meets hardly 15 percent of the
demand for the almost 90 percent of the entire scientific device
with high end application. India continues to depend on the
imports. There is a definite lack of the desire for the innovation
and the global vision for the Indian industry, for high technology
constitute only 6% of the export. Apart from the poor interface
between the industry, academic and the researchers. One major
factors which has led to the country lag in instrumentation is the
lack of modern electronics industry. Another important built poorly
recognized problem is the lack of the validation in the technology
transfer. A proto type which works in the laboratory should be able
to replicate its performance else where also the R&D group and
the industry often ends up blaming each other when this does not
happen. The prospects for the growth of the instrumentation
industry will be bright in India if only a “mission mode” approach is
adopted.

The major competitors of the company are fisher control, Tyco

valve, KSB, MIL control, keystone controls, KOSO, presser France
etc.
SOCIAL, PLOITICAL, LEGAL & STATUTORY ENVIRONEMENT

The current political issue regard instrumentation limited palakkad

is the disinvestment policy. The kerala high court has ordered that
further proceedings in the disinvestment of the palakkad based
instruments control valve limited (ICVI) would be subject to further
orders on a write petition challenging the disinvestment of 51% of
central government & turban limited.

Mr. justice k. Balakrishnan Nair passed the order on the petition

filled by instrumentation employee’s forum, palakkad unit.
According to the petitioner, ICVL was a profit making company and
a market leader till 1988-89. The company had been referred to
the BIFR in 1944. A scheme was formulated by BIFR which had
been reviewing it periodically. The petitioner said that the
company had been making the profits since the formulation of the
scheme by the BIFR. However it was decided at the inter
ministerial group held on jan 2001 to disinvestment the subsidiary
and invite expression of interest (EOI).

As many as five companies had submitted their EOI for ICVL and
there was no response for their subsidiaries. The core group of
secretaries at a meeting held on April 16, 2003had accepted the
bid of L&T for acquisition of 51% of the government’s stake subject
to approval of BIFR.

In spite of the fact that ICVL was a profit making unit,

instrumentation limited submitted a modified rehabilitation
proposal engaging formulation of only one joint venture for the
control valve unit at palakkad and sale of instrumentation limited’s
subsidiary, Rajasthan Electronic instrumentation limited at jaipur
and integration the rest of the business under instrumentation
limited. It was also agreed that the operating agency would seeks
suitable direction separately from the BIFR for disinvestment of
palakkad unit.

The petitioner contented that the proceedings of the BIFR could

not be regarded as a revival proposal of the company other than
efforts to hand over assets to L&T for a amount.

The government now proposed to disinvestment the hare for a

total consideration of Rs. 16.20 crore. When the petitioner came up
Mr. George Poonthottam, counsel for the petitioner submitted that
a perusal of the record and proposals of the government officials
would demonstrate a comprise of the interest of the state. The
BIFR had also acted contrary to the interest of the kerala
government.
COMPANY PROFILE
HISTORY

Self reliance in control and instrumentation and the growing need

for an indigenous source of supply of C&I systems for core
industries like power, gas, steel, oil, refineries, petro chemicals &
chemical. It was to achieve this prime objective that
instrumentation limited was established at kota, Rajasthan in
1964. This unit manufacturers a wide range of electronic &
pheumatic instruments in collaboration with world renowned
leader like Toshiba japan, H&B Germany, Fuji electronic Japa,
kysan Br Japan.

The second unit was established exactly a decade later (1974) at

palakkad dedicated to the manufacture of control valve, butterfly
valve, pressure reducing valve and allied equipment required for
the C&I packaging being the supplied by IL on turnkey basis.

IL PKD, started its operation in technical collaboration with an

internal reputed firm Yama takes-honey well company LTD Japan
for the manufacturing of control valve later safety valves are
manufactured in collaboration with M\SETSL Bernad France. The
unit in palakkad concentrates mainly on pneumatically operates
control valves.

The third unit was setup in early 1990s for the manufacturing of
ups of Fuji Japan & telephone exchange of C-dot at Jaipur.

ABOUT INSTUMENTATION LIMITED PKD

The second unit of instrumentation LTD was setup of at palakkad in

1974 in technical collaboration with an internationally reputed firm
M/S Yamatake-Honey well co Limited, Japan for the manufacturing
of industrial process. Control valve, safety relief valves, pressure
reducing valves & other allied items later pneumatic control drives
in collaboration with M/S brown Boverikent UK, safety relief valves
in collaboration with the m/s nuavo-pig none, Italy and electric
actuators in collaboration with MISETS L Bernard France also have
been added.

Starting with a turnover of about Rs. 2 crore in 1976-77, the unit

has achieved steady growth & the financial year 1988-89, it could
achieve a turnover of Rs. 18.2 crores & in the financial year 1998-
99, it could achieve a turnover of Rs. 43.65 crore it is worth
mentioning here that this growth has been achieved in spite of stiff
competition from the competitors that have entered the fields in
the recent past.

The quality starts right form the selection of the valve for the
particular application. Our trained application engineering’s helps
the customers to select suitable valve particular application
recognizing that the quality & reliability expected from the control
valve used in the thermal power stations & other industries are
very high, IL PKD has gone for the latest Japanese manufacturing
technology & the valves are designed % supplied conforming to
international pressure vessel codes.

One of the notable features of the unit is the stress given to the R
& D efforts right from the inception stage. The R&D teams of the
unit have developed as number of products, some of them winning
innovations awards. In order to update the technology of the
design work a computer aided design has been established.

Another aspect that has been incorporated is the flexibility and the
open mildness in the attitude which has helped us to enter areas
which do not full in the preview of the instrumentation schemes
various types of butterfly valves, gas trip valves and emergency
shut off valves, for steels plants, other process plants and mini
hyenas developed through in house R & D.

IL LTD PKD has taken up development and manufacturing of the

critical components for the special projects for the ministry of the
defense as a part of their diversification plan really the need to
make the nation self reliant in the products with which are
connected a valve repairs division has been set up to repair control
valves of any makes imported from the country thus reduces the
shut down time of the process plants to minimum as a part of
saving valuable foreign for the nation.

Currently the unit is working on the diversification plans to meet

the needs of the offshore drilling as well as tank level gauging
systems. Perhaps the palakkad unit is the only factories exist for
the all round testing & manufacturing of the control valve, safety
valve and allied items. The laboratory include noise measurement,
radiography, clean room etc. a numerically controlled
manufacturing guarantees performance of the critical items.

Another redeemly features in the unit is the excellent labour

management relationship. Adequate care is given for the welfare
of the employees. The company has a township with the amenities
like community hall, dispensary, nursery school etc realizing the
needs for the interaction with the educational institutions
instrumentation limited has been taking active part in curriculum
development particularly in the local engineering college. The unit
is also taking keen interest actions from the time to time the most
recent being the assistance given by the unit in the setting up of a
cancer defection center at palakkad.

A team of highly qualified, well trained & dedicated employees

makes the operations of the company profitable and the life of the
employees meaningful & colorful. During pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s
centenary celebrations and silver jubilees year of the
instrumentation limited, FCRI conceive & implemented by IL on
behalf of ministry of the industry is being dedicated to the nation
by the honorable president of the India Sri.R.Venketaraman, on
18th April 1989. This national R&D centers is an independent
institution run by a governing council appointed by the ministry of
industry, government of India subsequently in 1995, IL PKD has
been certified with ISO 9001.

Today IL plays a vital support role for a very wide spectrum of

industrial enterprises ranging from core sectors established such
as steel, power, cement and oil refineries to large medium and
even small scale industries it has in its short span of operation
emerged as a company that is truly contemporary in a global
