Stories from the Flight World

Introduction
Bebarapa gambaralat transportasi

Do you ever think why the flights are very often delayed? Are there any acceptable
reasons? When you watch the passengers of the delayed planes get angry with the people
from the airline company, what do you think of them? Probably you thought that if they
were well-informed and well-treated, they would not get angry. Or maybe it does not
always happen like that. Some people are patient while some others get bad tempered
easily. They can not control themselves very well.

Here are two lessons for you when you are writing di maskapai
story. Read them carefully
penundaan dengan esawat penerbangan dengan para
penumbang karena penundaan

1. Limit the breadth of your story. A novel can occur over millions of years and
include a multitude of subplots, a variety of locations, and an army of supporting
characters. The main events of a short story should occur in a relatively short
period of time (days or even minutes), and you typically won’t be able to develop
effectively more than one plot, two or three main characters, and one setting.
2. Decide who will tell the story. There are three main points of view from which to
tell a story: first-person (“I”), second-person (“you”), and third-person (“he” or
“she”). In a first-person story, a character in the story tells the story; in the
second-person the reader is made a character in the story; and in the third-person,

The more knowledge you have how to write story, the more easily you could write it.
You are going to listen to the story that applies the lesson above in Activity 11, 12 and
14.

Activity 2
Answer the following questions. After you finish them perform them with your partner.

1. Have you ever traveled by plane, train or bus?

2. What do you think if your transport is postponed? Why is usually flight
postponed?
3. Are you angry with the delay or are you patient enough to accept it?
4. Why are some people angry with the delay?
5. What do people do at the airport if their flight is delayed?
6. What do you prefer to do at the airport if your flight is postponed?
7. If the flight were postponed more than ten hours then you had to stay at the hotel,
would you criticize the airliner?
8. If you were not satisfied with the delay, would you blame the persons of the
airliner? Why?
9. If you blamed and attached them with bad words then they attacked you back,
would there be a quarrel?
10. Is this bad situation called resolution, crisis or orientation? Clarify your answer.

2
Generic structures

You have the narrative text again now. Therefore, to understand it better, let’s review its
characteristics. Do still remember one of the essential characteristics of the narrative text?
It is because of the fact that it has a problematic event. It makes narrative more
interesting than the other kinds of text.
You have learned the generic structure of the narrative text haven’t you? How
many components does the generic structure of the narrative text have? It has five
components, doesn’t it? Just mention them by putting them in a good order

a. complication
b. evaluation
c. resolution
d. re-orientation
e. orientation

After reading a short story or a novel, the readers often feel very satisfied with it..
Probably they find good lessons for their lives so they give their comment by saying “
Oh, the story is good”. It means they enjoy it very much. Why? Probably, the readers
know that author really constructs the story in such an interesting way that they feel it is
worth reading. The other reason is that writer may use different or new ways of creating
the stories. The readers, then, give their appreciation.

Lexicogrammatical features

There are two grammar points in this unit. They are subjunctives and reduced clauses.
They are often used by the authors in the narrative text. Subjunctives are actually a type
of verbs that are used to express unreal things, present and past. While reduced clauses
are constructed by omitting the part of them (verb, be) in the sub-clause that have existed
in the main clause. By constructing the reduced clause, the sentence is shorter and more
economical. The sentence, however, are still meaningful. Very often the author use them

Spoken Cycle
Steps of writing a story

A. Get the Knowledge

Activity 20
The more techniques of story writing you have the more easily you could produce it.
When applying these five steps, you will prove yourself what your story is like. Read
the following text, to answer the questions below the text.

18
1. Read plenty of short stories. Nothing can help you “learn” how to write a good
short story better than reading good short stories. Choose authors that you enjoy,
and also choose some of the “classics.” Pay attention to how the authors develop
their characters, write dialogue, and structure their plots
2. Choose an idea and flesh it out. At the very least, a story should have an
exposition (the story leading up to the climax), a climax (a turning point in a story
brought about by conflict between characters or within a character), and a
resolution (a satisfying ending to the story in which the central conflict is resolved
– or not). Move backward or forward from your starting idea (it may or may not
be the beginning of the story), and ask “What happens next?” or “what happened
before this?.
3. Know your characters. For a story to be believable, the characters have to be
believable, and their actions should appear inevitable given who they are.

Activity 21
With your partners, discuss your story-writing preparation by answering the questions
below.
Questions

1. What can help you write story easily?

2. Why do you have to learn writing stories from the way author work?
3. How do you move your ideas?
4. What is the benefit by knowing the characters in your story very well?
5. Why should you limit the breadth of your story?
6. If the characters in your story are unbelievable, what might your readers say?
7. What difficulties will you find if you write your story by using long period of
time?
8. Which one will you choose, using your main of view from the first, second or
third-person?
9. What is the benefit of using the third-person’s point of view in your story?
10. Why are you recommended to ask for someone else’s help to read your story
before you submit to your teacher?

Travel can reveal who we are on the inside

One Friday evening Paul Thomas, a middle-aged tall man, was at Dallas’ airport. He was
born in a small town, about 120 km from Dallas, called Elberton. He lived there till his
senior high school. He continued his study at Dallas University and graduated in 1985.
Now he lives and is working in Atlanta.
He was planning to fly home to Atlanta. He stayed in Dallas for his business for a
week. However, his flight was postponed until 10PM, then 11 PM, then 1AM Saturday
morning and he was beginning to fear he couldn’t fly to Atlanta.
Other passengers began getting ugly about the inconvenience, but Paul began telling
jokes about it. Suddenly it seemed that the crowd split in two. The ones who were
complaining congregated to one side of the terminal and others who shared his more
light-hearted approach to life moved to my side. At around 1AM they told us that the
flight might be cancelled so many folks were booked onto a flight at 6AM - now they
were really mad.
The thing that shocked him the most was a lady at her early forties, with a long
blue dress. She was the one of the worst attitudes. She was in her forties. She was
accompanied by her nephew to run her furniture business in Dallas. They were on their
way home to Atlanta.
Paul was determined to be a good example, if for no one else, the lady so that he could
see how his patience might act in the difficult situation. He tried to approached and talked
to her. He offered a help.
Paul said softly," Excuse me. If you don’t mind, let’s talk about you problem to
get the solution." Paul smiled. The lady lifted her head and replied, "Thank you. But it’s
none of your business." She turned over and left Paul. She walked to the corner, pulled
the chair and sat on it." Paul was not surprised to accept such an unfriendly reply.
Then a young man came to him, smiled and said, "Sorry, sir. I’m Bill. She is my
aunt, Mrs. Caroline Herbert. Paul answered," Oh, it’s OK. It’s OK, Bill. I’m Paul
Thomas. Nice to meet you"
"It’s nice to meet you too. Hem.. She is very disappointed with flight delay. She
loses a transaction," he continued
Paul nodded and said," I see. She loses a lot of money, doesn’t she?"
Bill answered," Yes, she does, Mr. Thomas."
Paul gave his opinion," Well …. Sometimes, we get good lessons from hard condition we
face. And if we’re willing to think it over, we may become light-hearted. We may accept
it wisely."
Bill replied," It’s rather philosophical, sir." Paul just laughed.
He is fully committed to apply his patience in everyday of his life. He knows many
people think about profit only. And because of money, they forget the meaning of
patience, the meaning of the Power of God. In their mind there is no idea that how
important it is to behave patiently or politely. Being patient and polite makes people get
God’s guidance and protection.
He had to try to be consistent with his belief however difficult the situation was.
He kept on maintaining a good attitude.

21
The airline privately changed Paul’s ticket to fly home on Sunday at no charge and even
put him in business class and thanked Paul for his attitude that made the evening much
easier on them. The problem was his luggage in Dallas waiting for his rental car with
hand-controls was not ready. So he just checked into a local hotel for a few hours before
picking up his rental car in the morning.
He drove two hours east to Elberton. The drive through the Georgia countryside
was gorgeous and plantation style homes were everywhere. He was watching on the side
of the road looking for his senior High School. He, then, remembered his teacher, Mr.
Tony Clinton who taught him the importance of being honest and patient in order to
reach the happiness in life. He used to pay great attention to the young people. He taught
the young people to spread peace wherever they were.
He drove to the local Wal-Mart and bought clothes (since my luggage was at
DFW airport). Finally he reached his hometown. , was happy to see his father and mother
checked into the pre-arranged hotel and caught up on his sleep.
The next morning he spoke to the Youth Organization of his hometown then shared his
spiritual experiences. Many folks came forward to pray and he hoped many of them were
happy with their faith. A few of the staff treated him to lunch before he drove back to the
Atlanta Airport and waited for six hours for his flight home (thankfully in business class).
Arriving at the Marriot Hotel Dallas, He was told by the receptionist that Mrs.
Hebert was sent to Dallas Health Centre. Paul looked very sad to hear the bad news. He
felt he had to visit her. He went to there by taxi. He looked for Mrs. Herbert’s room. Bill
opened the door and very surprised to see Paul at the door. He saw Mrs. Herbert lying on
the bed and looked very pale.
Bill said," She collapsed this morning in front of the hotel and was sent here."
Paul nodded and he asked for permission to talk to Mrs. Herbert. He came nearer to her.
Surprisingly, before Paul talked to her, she opened her eyes and said very softy," Sorry
for my being rude to you yesterday, Mr. Thomas."
"Oh, that’s Okay. That’s okay," Paul said softly, too. "Just take a rest."
After apologizing to Paul Thomas, Mrs. Herbert got asleep. Paul approached Bill. Both of
them got out the room. From Bill, he knew that Mrs. Caroline Herbert really regretted
being rude to him.
"She tried to look for you but she found you nowhere. She realized that you were
so kind. She was still furious over the delay so she behaved politely with you. With her
anger she could get nothing better even she became stressed and collapsed. She was
hospitalized. She had to stay here in Dallas longer. The doctor didn’t let her to fly to
Atlanta till Wednesday.
Bill said, "If my aunt had been patient with the delay of the flight, she wouldn’t
had been hospitalized."
"Yes, I think so. Your aunt is actually a good person, an intelligent one but it
seems that she gets stressed easily when she finds a problem.
"You’re right. So my uncle always asks me to accompany her in running her
furniture business." Bill answered..
"God still loves her. I hope she’ll get better soon," Pal sad.
"Thank you, sir. By the way what time would you go to the airport?"
"My flight is on 1AM tomorrow morning."

22
Paul drove back to the Dallas Airport and waited for six hours for my flight home
(thankfully in business class). I arrived home at 7AM, got a few hours of sleep and went
back to work refreshed with the knowledge God still uses a sinner like me for His Glory.
