Interview Workshop Guidelines 

 
Each group member should start by telling their group about their research 
question and who they are going to interview.  
Then, each member should read their questions to their group, paying attention to 
how the questions sound when read aloud.  
Then, the group should evaluate them for the following: 
 
1. Are the questions relevant to the research question/topic?  

2. Is the language of the questions meaningful to the respondents? 
3. What sorts of responses might the interviewer receive? Do the questions 
elicit the types of response that the interviewer will need? 
4. Are all three different types of questions present? (factual/feeling questions, 
story/narrative questions, and interpretation questions) 
5. Are there problems with the questions—double barreled questions, leading 
questions, multiple issues in a single question etc.? 

6. Are there questions that might be considered especially personal or private? 
How is the interviewer going to deal with that.  

7. Does the question order help to motivate the respondents to participate in 
the study and answer all the questions? 

8. What are the most essential questions that the interviewer should be sure to 
ask?
