The 30 Sihaam

Audhu Bismi Nahmadhahu Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Respected Listeners

As Muslims, all of us regularly recite the Holy Quran and eagerly seek ways to
learn its meanings.
In Surah Fathiha, the opening chapter of the Holy Quran, we recite;

(1:6) Takeuson thestraight path. ﴾

َ

The approximate English meaning being;

Guide Us on the Straight Path IHdhinas Siraathal Mustaqeem
The path of those on whom You have Sirrathallazeena Anghamtha alaihim
bestowed Your Grace

So, we ask the questions, who are these favored people - the “Anghamtha
alaihim” – those whom Allah guides on the straight path as well as those on
whom Allah has bestowed his Grace.

An important source for seeking and learning is the Holy Quran itself.

The second Surah in the Quran, Surah Baqara, which is the Surah
immediately after Surah Fathiha, begins as follows;

(2:1) Alif. Lām. Mīm. ﴾١﴿ ‫الم‬

(2:2) ThisBookhasno doubt in it - aguidancefor the
God-fearing, ﴾٢﴿ ‫ن‬

In this Aayath we hear the word Muthaqeen

﴾٥﴿ ‫ن‬
َ ‫حو‬ُ ‫اْلُمْفِل‬

We find the words Ulaaika ghalaa Hudhdham MinRabbihim; Wa Ulaaika Humul

Muflihoon

In both these Aayaths Allah Ta’ala has mentioned 3 praiseworthy categories

of people – the ‘Muththaqeen’ (the God Fearing), the ‘Hudhdham

1
MinRabbihim’ (those who are guided by their Rabb) and the ‘Muflihoon’ (those
who are successful).

Quite often in the Quran we hear the words Muthaqoon, Sadiqeen, Muflihoon,
Sabireen, Muhsineen, Mutawakkileen and so on.

This is how Allah Ta’ala describes good people. We also see in the Holy Quran
phrases such as;

InnAllaha Yuhibbul Muhsineen Allah loves those who do good

InnAllaha Yuhibbuththawwabeena wal Surely Allah loves those who are most
yuhibbul Muthathahhireen repenting, and loves those who keep
themselves pure
FainnAllaha Yuhibbul Muththaqeen Allah loves the God-fearing
Wallahu Yuhibbus Saabireen Allah loves the steadfast.
InnAllaha Yuhibbul Muthawakkileen Surely, Allah loves those who place
their trust in Him.
InnAllaha Yuhibbul Muqsitheen Surely, Allah loves those who do
justice.
InnAlaha Yuhibbullazeena Surely Allah loves those who fight in
YuQaathiloona Feesabeelillah His way

We are really curious about these categories of people that Allah has
described.

We would like to be called a Muttaqi, a Sadiq, a Saabir and so on by Allah

Ta’ala – wouldn’t we?
Who are these people, what are their qualities that Allah Ta’ala loves and how
could be aspire to possess these qualities and become one of them?

We then read in Faza’il E Sadaqaat – Part 2 - [Under the section ‘Ayath in

praise of contentment’] some interesting information about these categories
of people who are loved by Allah.

Ibn Abbas Radhiallaho Anho says: “Allah Ta’ala says in Surah Najm (53:37),
praising Ibrahim Alaihissalaam:

(53:37) and of Ibrāhīmwho fulfilled (his duties)? ﴾٣٧﴿ ‫َوِإْبَراِهيَم اّلِذيَوّف ٰى‬

The Ayath means that Ibrahim Alaihissalaam fulfilled all that Islam demands.

According to the description in Fazaail E Sadaqaath, these demands fall into

thirty broad categories, known as the thirty ‘Sihaam’ of Islam.

Ten of these Sihaam have been indicated in Surah Tauba in the Verses; (111
-112)
Innallah Hashtharaa minal Mu’mineena Anfusahum Wa Amwaalahum bi anna
lahumul Jannah.

Surely, Allah has bought their lives and their wealth from the believers, in
exchange of (a promise) that Paradise shall be theirs
2
3
Ten others have been recounted in Surah Ahzaab in the Verse No 35
Innal Muslimeena wal Muslimaath
Surely Muslim Men and Muslim Women

Six more have been described in Surah Al Mu’minoon, verses numbers 1 – 11

Kadh Aflahal Mu’minoon
Success is really attained by the Believers

The description of four others occurs in Surah Ma’arij in the Ayath No’s 26 –
35
Wallazeena Yu Sadhiqoona Bi Yaumidh Dheen
Those who believe in the Day of Judgement as True

Put together, these make thirty in all.

Whosoever meets his Lord (On the Day of Judgment), after having fulfilled
one of these obligations, will be deemed to have practiced one thirtieth part
of Islam.

All these 30 Sihaam require more explaining, but since this program is a very
short one I shall only identify them. Insha Allah we pray that this program
becomes a cause of motivating all of us to apply ourselves to learning more
about these Sihaam.

Put together, these make thirty in all.

Whosoever meets his Lord (On the day of Judgement), after having fulfilled
one of these obligations, will be deemed to have practised one thirtieth part
of Islam.
