His full name is al-1ajj al-Yazīd al-Bujrāfī. His Shaykh, Moulay Sulaymān, gave him the
nameal-Buzīdī.Oneday,hesaidtotheassembled fuqarā:3‘Wehavechangedthisdisciple’s
namefrom‘al-Yazīd’;donotcallhimbythisnamefromthisdayforth.Rather,say‘al-Būzīdī’;
for our master, Sīdī Moulay al-‘Arabī al-Darqāwī, had a disciple named Sīdī al-Buzīdī al-
Ghumārī,whowastheinheritorofhissecret,astheShaykhhimselfstatedclearly.Also,the
Shaykh of our Shaykh al-‘Allāwī4 was named Sīdī 1amū al-Būzīdī;5in our time, too, we
have our own Būzīdī!’ Changing a name for a better one has a precedent in the Prophetic
Sunnah.Whenthe fuqarāheardthesewordsfromShaykhMoulaySulaymān,theyhelda
greatandblessedgatheringtocelebratethenewname.Afterthat,theShaykhwasknownto
allandsundrybythenameal-Būzīdī.

He was born in 1925 CE to the tribe of Banī Shīkar, of the Rīf. He memorised the noble
Quranunderthetutelageofhisfather,mayAllahhavemercyonhim,amanofknowledge
who had memorised the Quran and served as imam to several mosques in the region
throughout his life, and who had taken the spiritual way from Shaykh al-‘Allāwī . When
Shaykhal-Būzīdīreachedtheageofnineteen,in1943,hisfathertookhim,inthecompanyof
the muqaddam6Sīdī Bin‘īsā, to Sīdī Mu(ammādī Bil-1ājj , who gave him the general
litanies of the ‘Allāwī order. This confirmed what Moulay Sulaymān had once said to him:
‘Youarefromus,andwearefromyou.’MoulaySulaymānwasoverjoyedwhenSīdīal-Būzīdī
enteredtheorder.

Oneday,theShaykh,accompaniedbyhisfriendSīdī‘AbdulSalāmibn1amūal-Sīdānī,went
toShaykhMu(ammādīBil-1ājjwiththeintentionofinvokingtheSupremeName.7Aftera
time,heauthorisedthemtodoso,andorderedthemtokeepthecompanyofShaykhMoulay
Sulaymān, informing the latter that their spiritual training would continue under his
instruction.

MoulaySulaymānwasdelightedbyhisdisciple,sayingofhimonenight,inthepresenceof
the fuqarā, many of whom are still alive today: ‘Bear witness, O fuqarā, that this man has
todaybecomeasontome;soveneratehim!’Thiswasin1944.MoulaySulaymānsingledout
hisstudental-Būzīdīwiththislavishpraise,andthishighstatusamongstthedisciples.From
thispointon,Sīdīal-BūzīdīremainedinthecompanyofhisShaykh,doinghisutmosttoserve
hismaster,andhiszāwiya.8Hetookchargeoftheaffairsofthezāwiya,leadingthechorusof
singersofspiritualodesinthegatherings,aswellasservingasimamforthefive-dailyprayers,

allbythepermissionofhisShaykh,andwithhisblessings.Byhishand,Allahincreasedthe
numbers of the fuqarā, and the order began to grow, and expand. Thanks to his ceaseless
effortstoraisefunds,thezāwiyawasextended,andrebuilt.

Allah gifted the Shaykh with a strong memory. He memorised all of Moulay Sulaymān’s
poems,numberingtwohundredandfourteeninall,aswellasthecollectedpoemsofShaykh
al-‘Allāwī.MoulaySulaymānwasnotamanofletters,andhechargedSīdīal-Būzīdīwiththe
responsibility of writing down his poems. They would often come to him suddenly, in the
middleofthenight,andhewouldgointothestreetandcallonSīdīal-Būzīdītowake,and
comedowntowritethepoembeforeitescapedhim.Hewouldthentellhimtomemoriseitby
morning,andcomposeamelodyforit.Hewouldthensingitfortheassembled fuqarā.His
voicewasbeautifulanddeeplymoving;everyoneagreedthathewasblessedwitha‘flutefrom
theHouseofDavid’.

In1946,AllahvouchsafedMoulaySulaymānwithpriorknowledgeofthepassingofthegreat
Gnostic,SīdīMu(ammādīBil-1ājj,mayAllahhavemercyonhim.Hesaidtohisstudent,Sīdī
al-Būzīdī:‘Strive,anddoyourutmost:foraftereightdays,wewillestablishaneworder.’The
matterwasashesaid,foreightdayslater,news cameofthedeathofSīdīMu(ammādīBil-
1ājj.ThefuqarātoamanpledgedallegiancetoMoulaySulaymān.

Soonafter,Sīdīal-BūzīdīsawhisShaykhinadream.Hesaidtohim:‘Rise,andstrive;forI
willmarryyouintomyfamily,outwardlyandinwardly.’ThiswasasubtleindicationthatSīdī
al-Būzīdī would inherit the spiritual legacy of his Shaykh . He married his Shaykh’s
daughterin1947.MoulaySulaymānundertooktosettlethedowryhimself,forheknewthat
his student was too poor to pay it. Shaykh al-Būzīdī remained faithful to his Shaykh, along
with a group of pious brethren, who bore the standard of the order, and strove in Allah’s
cause,asHemerits:

Someofthemhavefulfilledtheirvowindeath,andsomeofthemwait still;theyhavenot
changedintheslightest.9

TheShaykhservedinthearmy,wherehehadagreatinfluenceoverthedivisioninwhichhe
was based. By Allah’s will, he was able to enter a large number of fellow soldiers into the
order, and guide them to Moulay Sulaymān. They became fuqarā, and made much
remembrance of Allah. They would hold gatherings of dhikr, singing spiritual odes and
performing the haIra,10even within their barracks. Praise be to Allah, this was an amazing
sighttobehold.ByHisgrace,manyofthemrosetobecomeeliteamongtheSūfīs,afterthey
hadatonetimebeenengagedinfrivolity,lewdness,alcoholismanddebauchery.

In1953,heleftthearmyandfocussedallhiseffortsonservingthe zāwiyaandthebrethren,
by the permission of his Shaykh, Moulay Sulaymān. He remained without work until 1955,
whenhetookajobasasecurityguardatasteelworksintheregionofKūFūlāsā,Nador,where
hisShaykh’s zāwiyawasbased.Hewaslikeareplenishingrain:itbringsbenefitwhereverit
falls.HeremainedsteadfastincallingtoAllah,untilAllahguidedbyhishandagreatnumber
ofhisfellowemployees,whobegantovisitMoulaySulaymāneveryweek,followingthepath
oftheorder,mayAllahbepraised.Intheend,therewerearoundfiftyfuqarāwhoallworked
togetheratthecompany.

TheShaykhbegantoconsiderextendingthezāwiya,whichwasunabletoaccommodatethe
vastnumbersofpeoplewhohadbeguntovisititfromallaround.TheShaykhstrovetocollect
donations and assistance for the project, and Allah gave him success in the matter, and
brought to him a group of Spanish engineers, who had the privilege of installing water and
electricity to the zāwiya, which had been in need of both. When the work was finally
completed,thefuqarāwereinvitedfromallaroundtoattendacelebratorygathering.Itwasa
grandoccasion,attendedbyaroundtwothousandpeople.

MoulaySulaymān wasnowinhiseighties,unableto move,ortoleavehishouse.Sīdīal-
BūzīdīundertookresponsibilityforhisShaykh’swholefamily,byhispermission.Thiswasin
additiontohisresponsibilitiestothezāwiya,andorganisingthegatheringsofthefuqarā,and
the travel and celebrations that took place annually. He attended twenty-five annual
gatheringswithhisShaykhMoulaySulaymān,andhealonewaschargedwiththetaskof
thepreparations,includingorganisingthefood,andtheexpenses.

WhenthetimeofMoulaySulaymān’spassingdrewnear,hegatheredhisclosest,mostsincere
disciples,andtoldthem:‘Icounselyou,andsaytoyouwhatMoulayal-‘Arabīal-Darqāwisaid
inhisletter,concerninghisdisciple,al-Būzīdī:“Noonehasservedmeasal-Būzīdīhasserved
me;norhasanyonespenthiswealthonmeasal-Būzīdīhas;norhasanyonetiredthemselves
outwithmeasal-Būzīdīhas.”Hehasservedus,andstrivenforthesakeofourorder.Itismy
willthathebetheimamofthis zāwiya,andtheleaderofthe fuqarā.’Heindicatedtothem
thatal-Būzīdīwouldbehissuccessorafterhisdeath.MoulaySulaymānknew,however,that
somepeoplewouldbeenviousofhisdisciple,andsohecounselledhim,saying:‘Iftheyleave
youinpeaceinthe zāwiya,thenyouareitsimam;ifnot,thengo,andtakeyourchildrenand
your wife with you.’ He advised him to take his own wife with him, and his two sons, Sīdī
‘Abdul‘AzīzandSīdīMu(ammad,andsaidtohim:‘Whereveryougo,youwillfindsuccess.’

MoulaySulaymānpassedawayin1970,attheageofonehundredandthree.Sīdīal-Būzīdī
indeed remained in the zāwiya for only two years, before tribulations caused him to leave,
actinginaccordancewithhisShaykh’scounsel.Heestablishedhisown zāwiyainthecityof
Zaghanghan, in Nador, and the vast majority of the fuqarā, who had heard the counsel of
theirShaykh,MoulaySulaymān,wentwithhim.

Forthelastthirty-sevenyearsuntilthisday,hehasremainedinchargeoftheorder,strivingin
Allah’scause,truetothespiritoftheway,andthesoulofhisShaykh,bearingthestandard
ofthereisnogodbutAllah,steadfastinthecalltoAllah.Heisnotfoundexcepttobemaking
remembranceofAllah,orteachinghisdisciples.HeurgesthebelieverstorememberAllahat
alltimes,andtomaintaintruthfulness,love,communityandcompanionship.Healwayswears
thedressoftheSūfīs,arosaryaroundhisneck,andawhiteturbanonhishead,walkingwitha
cane: simple Sūfī clothes, with no hint of a desire to seek fame, or any innovation. His
outward manner is that of the prophetic Sunnah, and his inward state is focussed on the
onenessof Allah.Hisstateshowshispurity,andhisloyalty,andhissincerity,mayAllahbe
pleasedwithhim,andcausehimtobepleased,andextendforushislife.

HeholdsanannualgatheringinhiszāwiyainZaghanghan,duringthemonthoftheProphet’s
birth,Rabī‘al-‘Awwal.Itisattendedbymanyhundredsof fuqarā,whocomefromallover
Morocco to celebrate the birth of the best of creation . The Shaykh always leads the
remembrance and the singing of spiritual odes at these occasions, despite his age and ill-
health, and he is still to be seen in the centre of the circle in the haIra, guiding the fuqarā
therein,ashehasbeendoingformostofhislife.Ifguestscometoseehim,hegreetsthem
heartily, with generosity and hospitality. When guests from overseas attend a gathering, he
alwaysinsiststhatthey bebroughttothefronttositclosetohim,so he can helpthemfeel
welcome. He encourages his guests to eat well, and makes sure they have everything they
need.Heoftensays:‘Eatwell,sothatyouhavestrengthtorememberAllahwell!’

WhentheShaykhgatherswithhisdisciples,visitorsoftenremarkontheirdiscipline.Theyall
sit cross-legged, with their faces turned down and their hands in their laps, with their eyes
closed. When the Shaykh speaks, there is utter silence from the people gathered, the only
soundscomingfromthesobsofthosewhoaremovedtotearsbyhiswords.

His spiritual teaching is generally imparted by means of stories about the great men and
womenwhohavetroddenthespiritualpathinthepast.Themainemphasisofhisteachingis
theimportanceoftheremembranceofAllah,andkeepingthecompanyoftheotherdisciples.
He constantly encourages his disciples to remain close together. He has often said that
keepingthecompanyofthebrethrenisthehighestofspiritualexercises,andgivesbenefitto
the disciple that no litany can, even the Supreme Name, if it is performed without keeping
their company. This, the Shaykh says, is because maintaining the company of the brethren
resultsinconsistencyinone’sstate;whereasbeingseparatedfromthemmaycauseeventhose
ofhighstatestoregress.

TheShaykhisdeeplyconcernedwithpreservingthecorrecttoneofthezāwiya.Whenpeople
gathertogetherforanevent,theymayfallintoidlechat.TheShaykhstressesthatthe zāwiya
isaplaceintendedsolelyfortheremembranceofAllah,andthatifthebrethrenwishtotalk
about the affairs of this worldly life, it is better that they go out to talk, and return to the
zāwiyawhentheyarefinished.TheShaykhhimselfsitsinsilenceforlongperiods,speaking
onlytoimpartspiritualteachings,ortomakeremembranceofAllah.

TheShaykhhascomposedmanypoems,whicharesungbythefuqarāalongwiththoseofhis
Shaykh,andoftheotherShaykhsofthespiritualchainoftransmissionoftheorder.Someof
Sīdīal-Būzīdī’spoemsmakementionoftheuniquecharacteristicsoftheMessengerofAllah
,andmakehispraise.Othersconcernthespiritualteachingsoftheorder,andtheloveof
therighteous.Inothers,hepraiseshisShaykh,MoulaySulaymān,anddescribeshisstates.

Once,the fuqarāwent withtheShaykhtoTangiers.They were sittingwithascholar of the
Islamicscienceswholivedinthecity.Theybegantosingspiritualodes,andsangtheShaykh’s
poem Ayyuhaal-Rasūlal-Amjad,alongpoemcomprisedofstanzasoffourlinesorderedin
accordancewiththeArabicalphabet,eachstanzaendingwiththewordsYaMuhammad!The
scholardidnotknowthepoem,andwhentheyfinished,hesaid:‘Seethestateofthosewho
wentbeforeus!SeethelovetheyhadfortheirProphet!’Hehadassumedthatthepoem

waswrittenbyoneofthegreatmastersofold.Oneofthefuqarāsaid:‘Whatwouldyousayif
youknewthemanwhowrotethispoemissittingherebeforeyou?’HegesturedtotheShaykh.
ThescholarapproachedtheShaykh,andkissedhisforehead,saying:‘Ididnotknowthatsuch
peopleremainedonthefaceoftheearth.’

• Itti(āfDhawīal-Nuhīwaal-BaEā’ir,acollectionofthebiographiesofShaykhA(mad
al-‘AllāwīandseveralotherShaykhsfromtheorder,includinghisownShaykhMoulay
Sulaymān.

• Mu(ajjat al-Dhākirīn fī al-Radd ‘alā al-Munkirīn, a presentation of the evidences
fromtheQuranandSunnahtosupportthevalidityofmanySūfīpractices.

He has also written several epistles in which he answers questions put to him regarding
aspectsoftheSacredLaw.

He continues to compose new poems, which he brings to every special religious occasion,
makingeverymeetingwehavewithhimacauseforcelebration.

MayAllahpreservehim,andmayHesendhisbenedictionsandsalutationsuponourmaster
Mu(ammad, the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family, and his companions, and his
descendents;andupontheinheritorsofhislegacy,theAwliyāofAllah.
