TECHNOLOGY
Sub-800-gram frames are useless if they’re disposable after one season. So are
suspension designs that require a degree in engineering to tune, maintain, and
ride. Bottom line: If you can’t trust your bike, you’ll never discover what you’re
capable of. GT’s frame, suspension, and construction technologies embody this
philosophy, enabling you to see what you’ve been settling for.

TRIPLE
TRIANGLE
There’s a reason why most of GT’s frames can be recognized without
paint, without decals, without callouts. More than just another approach
to frame building, GT’s Triple Triangle™ frame design is the physical
manifestation of our philosophy toward bike building. By reducing the
size of the shapes made by the top, seat, and chain-stay tubes, Triple
Triangle™ frame designers reduced the size of high-flex areas, improving both
steering and pedaling responsiveness, and yielding a stronger, more rigid
structure capable of handling generations’ worth of abuse.

INDEPENDENT
DRIVETRAIN
Most brands try to reinvent their suspension systems each time a new riding
style comes into vogue. It’s a noble approach, but one that often leads to designs
that make significant performance compromises in certain disciplines, rob
riders of gas when they hit a climb, or require a degree in engineering to
set up and maintain.

Rather than trying to chase a moving target, GT has focused its efforts on
developing a balanced solution that works well in a multitude of situations.
We focus on the core problem plaguing all full-suspension designs: pedaling
efficiency. Our philosophy? Your pedaling shouldn’t affect your suspension and
your suspension shouldn’t affect your pedaling. Our approach? To make the
drivetrain and the suspension work independently of each other. The result?
Independent Drivetrain™—a simple, efficient system that performs just as well
on the DH course at Mont Saint Anne as it does on a UCI XC course, while
being simple enough to set up and maintain in your own garage, on your own
stand, with parts that are readily available at any dealer.

FOC
CONSTRUCTION
From the 1996 Superbike Project designed in conjunction with USA
Cycling for the Atlanta Games, to the first commercially viable
thermoplastic bike, to the world’s first carbon downhill and BMX frames,
GT has long led the charge in composite bike frame construction. Our legacy
is inherent in our proprietary method of building carbon-fiber frames,
a process we call Force Optimized Construction™ (FOC).

FOC ULTRA: When you’ve been refining composites for as long as we have, you learn a thing or two about
carbon fiber bikes along the way. Things like how lugged carbon frames can be weaker (and heavier) than
Monocoque designs, or the impact that kiting and sequencing can have on the strength of a frame. The
specifics of these learnings aren’t what’s important; The end result – process improvements which have allowed
us to build a Zaskar Carbon frame that’s just as strong, but over 300g lighter than its predecessor – is. NEW for
2011, FOC ULTRA™ is the manifestation of nearly two decades of composite bike making, and is the crown
jewel of GT’s construction technologies.

MONOCOQUE CONSTRUCTION: GT’s Triple Triangle Frame Construction yields the optimum balance
of stiffness, strength, and weight of any conventionally-built bike. Unfortunately, there are times when
conventional just doesn’t cut it. Whether it’s because they need to cheat the wind, deliver more power to the
rear wheel, or account for a longer travel shock, Riders who are hell-bent on changing the game often require a
frame shape which would be nearly impossible to achieve with traditional tubing shapes. Monocoque
construction allows frame designers to abandon traditional tube shapes in favor of frame designs and shapes
which allow riders to re-define their respective discipline.

HYDROFORMED ALUMINUM: We love bikes which you can rely on 24-7-365. And bikes that with
dynamic lines and tube shapes, and are visually stunning enough to have Andy Warhol roll over in his grave?
We love those even more. We don’t, however, like the added weight that comes along with either. That’s why we
employ Hydroformed aluminum tubes on many of our bikes. Created by applying a pressurized liquid to a
uniform shape of aluminum, Hydroformed tubes are strong, light, and can take unique shapes without
compromising strength or adding weight, ensuring that areas with tight tolerances are built to the specifications
needed by the rider, and that the GT Graphic Design team can have a canvas to work with instead of a pipe.

SPF ALUMINUM TUBING: Aluminum has more advantages over other frame materials than Superman
does over Lex Luthor. It doesn’t corrode, it’s stiff, it’s responsive, and it’s super lightweight. Also like Superman,
Aluminum has a kryptonite. The more you manipulate and treat aluminum during the construction process, the
more it loses these advantages. To preserve aluminum’s crime-fighting characteristics, GT uses SPF™, a special
forming process which controls the material at a granular level, optimizing it for its intended ass-kicking use.

BUTTED TUBES: Just because you can’t see the technology doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Even GT bikes with
traditional tube shapes feature butted tubes – tubes which remove material from areas where it’s not needed, and
are re-enforced with extra material at key stress points.
