Dr. Dragan Klaic is a theater scholar and cultural analyst.

He serves as a Permanent
Fellow of Felix Meritis Foundation in Amsterdam and is teaching courses in Arts and
Cultural Policy at the Leiden University, Central European University Budapest, Bologna
University and elsewhere. Beside lecturing at universities, Klaic is speaking at
conferences and symposia and serving as advisor, editor, researcher and trainer. His
fields of engagement are contemporary performing arts, European cultural policies,
strategies of cultural development and international cultural cooperation, interculturalism
and cultural memory. He is the initiator and Chair of the European Festival Research
Project, a consortium for the study of the current festivalization of the daily life.

Educated in dramaturgy in Belgrade and with a doctorate in theater history and dramatic
criticism from Yale University (1977), Klaic worked as a theater critic and dramaturg,
held professorships at the University of Arts Belgrade (1978-1991) and University of
Amsterdam (1998-2003), co-founded the European Theater Quarterly Euromaske (1990-
91), led the Theater Instituut Nederland (1992-2001), and served as the President of the
European Network of Information Centers for the Performing Arts and of the European
Forum for the Arts and Heritage. He was the Moderator of the Reflection Group of the
European Cultural Foundation (2002-2004) and author of its final report Europe as a
Cultural Project (Amsterdam: ECF 2005). In 2005 he studied the emerging alternative
cultural infrastructure in Istanbul and it connectivity with the EU cultural constellations
(www.labforculture.org). In 2007 he was a Research Fellow of Collegium Budapest. In
2003 and again in 2008 he is working with the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and
Food Quality (LNV) on the cultural dimension of its policies.

Among his books are several works published in the former Yugoslavia in Serbo-Croat
before 1991, as well as Terrorism and Modern Drama (co-edited with J. Orr, Edinburgh
Univ. Press 1990, paperback 1992), The Plot of The Future: Utopia and Dystopia in
Modern Drama (Michigan Univ. Press 1991), Shifting Gears/ Changer de vitesse (co-
edited with R. Englander, TIN Amsterdam 1998), an exile memoir Exercises in Exile,
published in Dutch (Thuis is waar je vrienden zijn. Ballingschap tussen Internet en
Ikeatafel, Amsterdam: Cossee 2004) and in Croatian in Zagreb in 2006 and a book on
international cultural cooperation, Mobility of Imagination (CEU CAC 2007). Klaic’
articles appeared in many periodicals in several languages and more than 50 edited
books. He is a Contributing Editor of the Theater magazine (USA) and serves on
advisory boards in Budapest, Brussels, The Hague and Amsterdam. Dr. Dragan Klaic
