Tasks

Task One

Students are to compose a 400 word (minimum) comparative essay that compares how two separate
religions have dealt with or are currently dealing with a single common issue. (For example, a student could
examine how both Islam and Hinduism deal with the issue of women’s rights. This will involve a comparison of
how and why the rules of both religions differ and are similar).

Task Two

Students are to transform their comparative essay into an oral presentation approximately three (3) minutes
in length. This oral presentation is not to contain any new information or research, but will need to be
supported by a PowerPoint slide-show. The slide-show should be ‘image heavy’ and not display any more than
twenty words in total.

Preparation Steps
STEP ONE: Choose two religions

The students must choose two religions from the following list. These religions will be compared during the
essay. Students should not feel limited by this list, but the use of any religion not listed here must be approved
by the teacher.

1) Christianity
2) Islam
3) Judaism
4) Hinduism
5) Buddhism
6) Taoism
STEP TWO: Choose a single issue

The students must choose one ‘issue’ from the following list. The student will use an examination of this issue
to highlight how both religions are different and similar.

1) Women’s rights
2) Methods of handling oppression, both foreign and domestic
3) Alcohol consumption
4) Sport, gambling and popular culture
5) Medical practices and contraception

Condition
1 The essay is to be written in paragraphs and should be over 400 words. Students are
advised to aim for between 600-800 words in providing sufficient analytical detail, but this is
not mandatory.
2 The oral presentation should be nothing more than a simple conversion of the essay into
an oral format. It should not contain any more information than the essay, and can contain
phrases and expressions used in the essay.
3 The students are not permitted to simply ‘read-out’ their essays. The essay must be
converted into an oral format and all spoken content should be supported by an image heavy
PowerPoint presentation.
Religion Assignment

The Comparison of Women in Muslim and Christianity

By Nidhruv Sivasubramaniam
Religion is a difficult phenomenon to understand, different countries have different
religions with different beliefs. Due to this reason there are always differences, with
varying ranges of differences. These differences cause some religions to become
more tyrannical than others. One main example is the treatment of women in these
different religions. Two very different religions is Muslim and Christianity their
treatment of women is very different. Nidriv avoid repetition of the same word use
your thesaurus to find similar words and improve your articulation. No Essay plan -it
is obvious from the generalizations and lack of organization and FACT. What
particular aspect of the two religions are you comparing> What are the issues? You
need to specify here.

Christianity is equally fair aims for equal treatment for all not just religious members

to any member of the religion. It is considered as one of the most dominant religions
of the world. Get the statistics I don’t think you are right –research This causes the
community to make Christianity the “Norm” (I wonder if in Arabia they would agree?)
therefore many religions are compared and contrasted to Christianity (How would
you know this?) . When Muslim Islam is compared to Christianity it looks barbaric,
horrifying, and most of all, a religion that people do not want to be a part of. Mmm
maybe if you are from the west however Islamic people believe in it so whole
heartedly they suicide over it? However comma with closer examining examination
of the fine details of the Christianity religion it is possible to see that Christianity is
just as much a patriarchal society religion as Muslim Islam. Why? Research?.
What are you talking about? Which issue? Where does your evidence come from?
Where are your quotes from the Q’uran and the Bible.

Some examples are that: in Christianity women are not allowed to be priests as it is
consider to the male role assuming that men are more holy and closer to god than
women. Women’s main role is to bear the man a child; improper use of semi colon,
which should be used in a list of things it is not an abbreviation to avoid writing in
proper sentences. look after the child while the man is at work; a semi colon never
precedes ‘and’ and prepare dinner for the men after they return from work. Women
are seen as vassal for the next generation of the husband, figuratively speaking. The
feminist movement changed this belief, if not women would still be treated as less
than men and not as capable as men. But in modern times, much likes Muslim,
Christianity has softened. However just as the modern day improves so does the
Christianity knowledge of women and their rights. Some saying that prove this are as
follows. No longer will she be oppressed. She knows her rights and will exercise
them at her will.

Recently Muslims on the other hand, have had their name tarnished in the way they
treat women. The treatment is extremely bad. The women are forced into marriage
at a young age of about 15. Most of the time when women are raped it becomes
their fault for being raped and get stoned to death. They cannot get a divorce
however brutal their husbands are. They are pretty much treated like dirt, even
sometimes less than dirt. Even genital mutilation happens.

Forced marriages may still take place in certain small Indian, Pakistani and
Bangladeshi communities, many Muslim women from other backgrounds wouldn’t
stand for this

Female genital mutilation is and extremely cruel thing to happen to women yet it is
still practised in small places in Africa and Egypt, but is viewed as an inconceivable
horror by the vast majority of Muslims. This means that only a very small minority
practices such a horrid act.

Rape happens in pretty much all Muslim communities. The rape of women is
considered to be the woman’s fault. Most of the time men do not have to repent for
their crime. If a woman complains that she has been raped at the court, the court will
deem HER guilty and stone her to death. If she does not say anything and her family
finds out, she will be stoned to death. There is no escape from rape for the women of
a Muslimism religion.

To conclude, Muslim may not have many things in common with Christianity from the
broad look, However with closer examination it is possible to see that the principles
are very much in common of how women are treated. As both sides have negative
influences on women, the Muslim influences seem to be far more devastating than
the Christianity influences. Personally, I’d rather be a part of the Christianity than
Muslim but that’s just my belief.
