Texts:
Antigone by Sophocles
*The texts listed above are the main texts we will be working with this semester however, we will
most likely use several other texts and/or short readings such as articles, essays, short stories, and
poems. These will be assigned and handed out in class as we move through the semester.
Requirements and Expectations for your work
o Attendance - This is a one-semester honors class and contains a heavy reading and
writing workload therefore your attendance is crucial. Excessive absences and/or lateness to
class will affect your final grade.
o Tests, Quizzes, and Writing Assignments - Make-ups for tests and quizzes will be given
for up to one week after the original date of the test. All writing assignments, unless prior
permission has been granted, will lose 1 point for each day they are late. After one week, no
writing assignments will be accepted and you will receive a zero for that assignment. You
will be granted at least two revisions on each writing assignment that receives any grade
lower than a B. Writing assignments will count for 25% of your grade. Tests and
quizzes will count for 30% of your grade.
o Format for Written Assignments - All written work done outside of class must be typed
in standard format: 12 point Ariel or Times New Roman font and double-spaced with one-
inch margins. Time will be provided during school hours for students to use the computer if
necessary. When you use material from outside sources, it is required that you acknowledge
the author’s work in MLA format. *We will cover the rules and formatting of MLA style
citations in class.
o Reading Journals – You will all be given an in-class journal. Journal entries will follow
a specific format and will be completed at the beginning of each class. Your journals are
meant to give you a chance to express your thoughts, feelings, comments, and questions
about the text that we are working with. One day per week, we will gather in a read around
where we will each read from our journals and engage in a group discussion. Journals will
be periodically checked to ensure that you are using them in a way that will help you build
upon your reading comprehension and skills in literary analysis. Journals will count for
15% of your grade.
o Final Projects – 25% of your grade will be determined by the completion of a final
project that will be assigned later in the semester.
