Heat of neutarlization is the heat

change (produce) when one mol of

water is formed from the reaction
between acid and alkali.
Calculate heat of neutralization

1. Q = MC

2. NOMBOR OF MOL = MV/1000 OR

MASS/MOLAR MASS

3. H = Q /NO OF MOL

The value of heat of neutralization

depends on
i. The basicity of the acid
ii. The strength of the acid
iii. The strength of the alkali
i. The basicity of acid ,strong acid and
strong alkali

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H 2 O

H = - 57.3 kJ /mol

H2SO4 + 2NaOH → 2H2O +

Na2SO4
H = - 114.6 kJ /mol

Heat of neutralization of ethanoic

acid (weak acid) is less which is
-55kJ/mol because some of the heat
given out during neutralization is
used dissociate the weak acid.
because of the same reason.
eg of SPM Question:
50 cm 3 of 2.0 mol dm -3 sodium
hydroxide (NaOH) is poured into a
plastic cup and the initial temperature is
recorded. The initial temperature of 50
cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 hydrochloric
acid (HCl) is recorded. The
hydrochloric asid is then poured into the
plastic cup containing the sodium
hydroxide solution. The mixture is
stirred carefully and the highest
temperature is recorded. The results are
as follows:

Initial temperature of NaOH solution =

28.0 oC

Initial temperature of HCl = 28.0 oC

Highest temperature of the mixture =
34.5 o C
