LISTENING LESSON PLAN

Time: 20 min.
Level: Intermediate
Gender: F / M
Age: 15/17
Materials: board, cartons, envelops
Interaction: Ss /Ss - T / Ss
Assumptions: Ss have known lots of grammar patterns such as: ‘’ talking about
predictions, talking about past, present and future events... .’’
Anticipated Problems: The time can be a problem to understand the listening text in
detail.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students;

1) Will have covered the usage of predictions about the present events.
2) Will have improved their ear-training.
3) Will have improved their listening skills by hearing the conversation between
two friends.

WARM-UP

Time: 5 min.
Materials: words with colourful carton
Interaction: Ss/ Ss – T/ Ss
What students do: Ss try to find the hidden words in the classroom with their group
members and try to guess what the text is about.
Grouping: Ss are divided into two groups.
Aims:
- To motivate the students to get to the topic.
- To introduce the topic in an enjoyable way.
- To arouse Ss’ interest to listen to the text.
STEPS

1) The teacher divides the class into two groups and also divides board into two
parts. Then the teacher tells them ‘’ there are some words in the class let’s
find them and paste them on the board.’’ by showing them which part of the
board belong to which group. She also adds that ‘’ the group which finds and
pastes the more words will be the winner.’’
2) The teacher gives the time limitation and starts the game.
3) The Ss find and paste the words which they have found.
4) Then the teacher tells them ‘’Look at the words on the board. We will listen to
a dialogue and these words are taken from the text. Work in pairs and try to
guess what the text is about.’’
5) Then, the Ss look at the words on the board and try to predict the topic of the
text.
6) The teacher collects the Ss’ ideas.

The words on the board: ‘’ have a go at somebody, leaving party, difficult to


work with, office, take his family with him, apply for a job, employ an outsider,
promotion, sort out the problems, bad-tempered ‘’

WHILE LISTENING

Time: 10 min.
Materials: board, envelops
Interaction: T/Ss - Ss/Ss
What students do: The students are asked to listen to the text and understand
the topic clearly.
Grouping: Pair work, individual work
Aims:
- To have the students understand the listening context clearly.

FIRST LISTENING (4 min.)

AIMS:
- To have the students understand the text in general,
- To provide the students to catch the main idea of the listening text.

STEPS
1) The teacher says to the students that ‘listen to text and try to understand:
a) Who are they talking about?
b) What is his or her personality like? ‘
2) The students listen to the text and answer those questions.
3) After listening to the text, the teacher checks their answers.
SECOND LISTENING (6 min.)

AIMS:
- To have the students understand the text in detail.
- To help the students cover the listening text.

STEPS

1) The teacher gives envelops to the students.


2) The teacher wants the students to open to their envelops and try to put the
topics into correct order and reminds that one of them is extra.
3) While ordering the topics, the students may have problems. So the teacher
asks them ‘do you have any problem doing it? Do you want to listen to the
text once more?’
4) The students listen to the text once more and while listening, they put the
topics in order.
5) After doing it, the students turn to their partner and discuss about their order
of the topics.
6) Then the teacher checks their answers.

POST LISTENING

Time: 5 min.
Materials: none

What students do: Students write a stanza about the possible problems in the
working environment.
Grouping: Pair work
Aims:
- To encourage the students to use the authentic language.
- To encourage them to use their writing skills.

STEPS

1) The teacher wants students to write a stanza about the possible problems in
the working environment like in the text with their partners.
2) The teacher gives an example:
‘’ I have a problem with my colleague,
So, I became alcoholic.
She is very jealous of me,
Being a rich man is important for me.’’
