4 WELDING:

4.4.1 All welding of pressure retaining parts must be strictly in

accordance with the specified code.

4.4.2 When welding low or high alloy material, the chemical composition
of the electrodes / filler wires shall be equivalent to that of the
parent material. Alloy additions through the flux, other than that
required to make up the losses in the arc, are not permitted.

4.4.3 All butt welds and nozzle-to-vessel welds shall be full penetration
welds. These shall be back chipped, dye penetrant checked and
rewelded. If back chipping is not possible, root run shall be welded
by TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and fully dye penetrant checked.

4.4.4 No welding is permitted after stress relieving without prior consent

of the Inspector / Client.

4.4.5 Welding of dissimilar metals:

Where stainless steel is specified for corrosion resistance, carbon

steel shall not be directly welded to stainless steel of thickness
less than 5 mm.

4.4.6 When joining adjacent shell courses, the longitudinal seams shall
be spaced at least four times the thickness of the thicker plate
being joined or 100 mm, whichever is higher, along the
circumferential weld.

4.4.7 All the welds shall be ground smooth from inside. Wherever
internals like demister pad, cartridge, trays, etc. are fitted along
the full periphery of the vessel and are slided along the
longitudinal axis, all the welds shall be ground flush to shell plates
from inside.

4.4.8 Welding of SS parts of thickness 3 mm and below shall be by TIG

(Tungsten Inert Gas).

4.4.9 Welding Electrodes:

Low hydrogen electrodes shall be used for all manual, metal arc
welds of carbon steel shell having a thickness of over 12mm thick.
For all other welds high cellulose / rutile type welding electrodes
conforming to AWS classification are acceptable. Contractor must
furnish the brand names of welding consumables to CCIL for
approval. In addition to above Selection of Welding rod and Filler
wire shall be as below:

* - E-6013 electrode shall be used for welding of non-pressure

parts and structural members. Also E-6013 is acceptable for
material having an ultimate tensile strength of 60,000 PSI or less.
Material above this level shall be welded with E-7018 or similar
low hydrogen electrode.
In addition to the above said welding procedures, vendor can
follow other types of welding procedures like GMAW and
appropriate electrode / filler shall be chosen.
