AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO STUDY

(Dr. Khalid Amin)

1. General:
1.1 Time Table:
1.1.1 Adhere to it strictly
1.1.2 Provide enough time for every subject

2. Reading:
2.1 Develop speed in reading
2.2 Stop now and then to test yourself at what you have read

3. Underlining:
Underline the key words and ideas

4. Note taking:
Take brief notes immediately when you listen or read an important point

5. Outlining:
Consult good outline works for guidance. Make an outline of the topic read by
pinpointing the main ideas by giving numbers. e.g.
5.1 Main idea:
5.1.1 Subsidiary points
5.1.2 “ “

5.2 Main idea:

5.2.1 Subsidiary points
5.2.2 “ “

6. Reviewing:
Review the material read in the past. Try to associate new things and
experiences with those of the past.

Reviewing at proper intervals helps to retain mastery. Review the weak points
again and again. Use the material read in discussions, writing etc. Review only
those parts which are important and can be useful in future. Apply the theories
learnt in practice. This makes life meaningful and interesting.

7. Writing:
To write well, think clearly, appreciate fully, and understand adequately. Writing
technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
Important points to consider:
7.1 Identification of purposes you have in mind
7.2 Logical or psychological arrangement of material
7.3 Correction revisions, especially of the best phrases, vocabulary
7.4 Standards of accuracy, fairmindedness and neatness.
ESSAYS:
 Everybody knows something about everything. Write all you know, think or feel
about the subject in your own style.

 Introduce the subject in an interesting manner.

8. English:
Speak with any kinds of audience. Try as far as possible to agree, if not disagree
tactfully. Speak with imaginary audience.
Speak slowly, distinctly, confidently. While studying English give your
imagination and emotions free reign. Discuss the interesting parts of what you
read with your friends. Try to make as many contacts as possible with
professional people. Listen to BBC, CNN News for correct pronunciation.
Never be discouraged. Progress from simple to complex. Never be satisfied
until you achieve precisely the effects you have in mind.

9. Study of Mathematical Subjects:

Practice, practice esp. your weak points. Consider solving problems as a
pleasuresome adventure. Occasionally review the different formulas or methods.
If you meet with difficulty, persist.

10. Visual aids:

A lot is given in maps, and figures, diagrams and pictures. Study these carefully
along with the given description.

11. Concluding Hints:

Consider your handicaps and draw backs and try to remove them.
Learn from mistakes you and others make.

After you have chosen a career devote most attention to the study of the subject
of your specialization. The student who conscientiously does his best is almost
sure to succeed. The process of self education is endless. It is also the most
delightful endeavor in life.
