Notes:

1) The density of the liquid PET melt is a function of the abs. temperature & the absolute pressure. The equation used for
calculation is: D = (1 / ((13.5*T / P + 38230) + 0.659))*1000, where D = density in kg/m3, T = abs temperature in °K & P = abs
pressure in lbs/in2 abs. In the table above, a start value of 3570 psia (251 kg/cm2a) is used for calculation. The subsequent density
values use a reduced pressure & increased temperature data based on the pressure drop & temp rise in the pipe. The equation
has been modified to accommodate this. A most convenient start pressure would be the differential head of the finisher gear
pump.
2) The dynamic viscosity is calculated as a function of the intrinsic viscosity & the melt temperature.
3) The pressure drop is calculated from the Hagen-Poiseuille equation 32*m*v*l/d2, where m = dynamic viscosity in Pa.s, v =
velocity, m/hr, l = length, m & d = inside dia of pipe, m. Velocity may be substituted by vol. flow rate divided by the c/s area of the
pipe i.e. 4Q/p*d2. Q may be substituted by mass flow rate divided by density i. e. M/r.
4) The inside diameter in inches is picked from the "P & T DATA" sheet as a function of nominal pipe size & schedule number of
pipe.
5) The specific heat of the liquid PET melt is a function of the temperature.
6) The final temperature is a function of the pressure drop in the polymer transfer line. The temperature increases with increase in
pressure drop
7) The final intrinsic viscosity is inversely proportional to residence time & final temperature I.e. increase in residence time &
temperature decreases the viscosity.

Following equations are used:

1) Dynamic Viscosity m, Pa.s = e2.303*((5*ln IV/2.303)+(2953/(T(°C)+273.15))-0.9508) / 10 (Melinar Polyester Correlation -recommended

given per NG-3 documentation by Andy Witt)
2) Specific Heat Capacity Cp, Kcal/Kg-°C = 0.3243 + 0.000565*T°C
3) DT = T2 - T1 = (2.343*10-3*DP) / Cp*r, hence final temp. T2 = T1 + D T
4) Equation: (1/IVt)1.466 - (1/IV0)1.466 = 3.35*10-3*(e(34.3*(T-558.3)/T))*t, where IV0 = IV at time t = 0, IVt = IV at time t = t & T is final
polymer melt temperature in °K.
