The reproduction in teleostean varies considerably because of

which it is one of the most widely studied topic. Studies in fishes have

shown it to be a class of various spawning habit. Prabhu (1956)

divided fishes into four categories depending on their spawning habits

as 1) Fishes that spawn once a year for a long time. 2) Fishes that

spawn once a year for brief period. 3) Fishes that spawn twice a year.

4) Fishes which spawn almost continuously.

Changes in the fishes reproductive organs shows at least two

alternate changes of quiescence and sexual maturity. Holmes (1968),

mentions of these two changes to be initiated by environmental factors

such as temperature, photoperiod, rainfall and food supply. Along with

the environmental factors internal stimuli which are mainly hormonal

in nature believed to influence greatly the breeding habits of fishes.

The reproductive cycle in fishes have been studied quiet

extensively (Prabhu 1956; Gokhale 1957; Sathyanesan 1962; Htun-

Han 1978; Kobayashi 1988; Basu 1990; Yadav 1995; Degani 1997;

Jena 1998). The pituitary gland of the fishes also has been studied in

great detail (Van Overbeeke 1967; Prasad Rao 1969 and 1972; Wal-

Sum and Chan 1974; Dar and Sathyanesan 1985; Siegmund et al.

1987 and Naik 1999).

The teleost B. dussumieri is found to inhabit the coastline of

India. These fishes are found in the muddy shore. They live in burrows

of invertebrates and show a remarkable tolerance to low salinity and

can stay outside water for a long time. These fishes are known for

delicacy. This teleost denotes the transition from the aquatic to

terrestrial mode of life.

The current study was initiated to understand the reproductive

cycle of the Boleopthalamus dussumieri and the effect of some

environmental factors on them and corresponding changes observed

in the ovaries, testes and the pituitary. Reports of earlier work

available of Gobiidae includes that of Kulkarni (1936) on P. barbarus;

Mutsaddi (1964) on B. dussumieri; Cinquetti et al (1991) on

Pardogobius martensi; Har and Sakti Pada (1993) on B. boddarti; Naik

(1999) and Roy (2000) on B. dussumieri.

The annual breeding cycle of B. dussumieri was divided into pre

spawning (September –December), spawning (January-May) and post

spawning (June-August).

The data generated during the present investigation is

incorporated in the thesis as follows:

The data collected on certain environmental parameters like

monthly average of maximum and minimum temperature, total rain

fall during a month and photoperiod were analysed in relation to the

average total length, average body weight, gonadosomatic Index

(G.S.I.) and Condition factor (K) of the fish on a monthly basis has

been given in Chapter I.

Chapter II gives the account of the changes observed in the

morphology of ovaries, histological changes in the ovaries

accompanied by the changes in the average diameter of the ova and

their nuclei.

Chapter III enlists the morphological changes in the testes,

histological changes in the testes, quantitative changes seen in the cell

types of the seminiferous tubule, changes in the diameter of the

seminiferous tubule and the changes in the sertoli cells.

In the last chapter the correlation between the changes in the

gonadotrophs of the pituitary gland, annual changes in the

environmental parameters and cyclic changes in the gonads of the

fishes are discussed.
