The role of surgery in patients with infertility is largely through keyhole surgeries. Hysteroscopy is done
to access the inside of the uterus for evaluation as well as for corrective surgery such as removal of

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that uses a catheter to place a number of washed
sperm directly into the uterus.

Intrauterine insemination is the placing of sperm into a woman’s uterus/womb. The semen obtained
from the husband/partner/donor is washed in order to maximise the chances of fertilisation. The
prepared sperm is placed near the top of the uterine cavity using a fine tube (catheter) passed through
the cervix (neck of the womb). The sperm placed in such a manner have a shorter distance to swim to
the fallopian tubes where they meet the egg/s. The procedure does not usually require anaesthesia.

Ovarian stimulation (using tablets and/or injections) results in the development of more eggs than in a
natural cycle thereby increasing the chances of pregnancy. However this will also increase the chances
of a multiple pregnancy. Hence monitoring by means of regular ultrasound scans is required. We
regularly perform two inseminations (at no extra cost) per cycle of treatment as we find that this gives
better results in our set up.

vitro fertilization.Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART)

When is ICSI used?

ICSI bypasses the natural processes involved in a sperm penetrating the egg, and is therefore used when

Rotunda Sperm Bank's Directed Donor Program is designed to assist professionals and patients with all
aspects of Directed Donor Testing and Processing. We actively recruit our own sperm donors. Sperm
donors are carefully screened for infectious diseases. Other criteria for selection of sperm donors are
normal semen parameters and that they have fathered children. However there can be no guarantee of
fertility and on rare occasions the thawed sperm sample is suboptimal in quality.

Prospective parents can choose the appropriate physical characteristics from the panel of donors so that
skin color, height, eye and hair color can be matched. We also have collaboration with Cryos, the world’s
largest international network of sperm banks. Anonymous caucasian sperm can be offered when
required.

Donated sperm may be used in an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) cycle if there is no female contribution
to infertility. Alternatively, it may also be used as part of an IVF cycle. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
(ICSI) is recommended to assist fertilisation if the donated sperm is being used in an IVF cycle.

Blastocyst & Embryo Freezing in IVF, Vitrification & Cryopreservation

It should be noted that not every couple undergoing IVF will need to worry about embryo
freezing/thawing, since not every couple will have sufficiently large number of "surplus" or non-
transferred embryos available for freezing.

Embryo freezing (at an additional charge) may be performed in couples who have just received a fresh
embryo transfer procedure and still have good quality embryos left. Recently a new technique called
Vitrification has been developed and has shown good results in studies carried out all over the world. At
Rotunda Clinic we offer this technique of embryo freezing.

The vitrified embryos will remain in storage to be used by the patients in the future. This can either be
for the creation of a sibling or in the unfortunate event where the “fresh cycle” was not successful, to
have another embryo transfer. Thawed embryos (after slow freezing which is the standard technique)
have a lower viability rate compared to “fresh” cycles. Vitrification has increased the survival rates of
thawed embryos.

The frozen embryo transfer cycle is much less invasive as it does not require taking FSH injections or
undergoing an egg collection procedure.
