ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
Structural Engineering
Assignment

Title of Assignment:
Design Project

Learning Outcomes/Assessment Criteria:

1. Understand linear and non-linear methods of structural analysis
2. Understand factors which influence design including economics, customer and use
needs, aesthetics, environmental costs and sustainability
3. Understand the appropriate codes of practice and industry standards and to apply
them correctly to the design process; consider methods of construction,
maintenance, demolition and disposal at the design stage
4. Collect, collate and synthesise data, integrate knowledge across disciplines and
apply engineering principles and a systems approach to the analysis and design
5. Define a problem, identify constraints and carry out conceptual design to consider
the merits of possible solutions and to idealise a structure
6. Check that the computer output is accurate
7. Analyse 2D and 3D frames using elastic methods
8. Apply non-linear methods to design of steel and concrete structures
9. Manage the design process, apply quantitative methods and software packages to
structural engineering problems and evaluate the outcome
10. Have an awareness of health and safety and CDM requirements, environmental
costs and the need for sustainable construction
11. Work alone with minimum guidance or as part of a design team
12. Ensure that designs are safe, economical and have a suitable appearance
13. Present design documents so that the design can be checked easily by other
engineers

Introduction:
A structure usually refers to any large, man-made object permanently fixed to
Earth's surface or in its orbit, as a result of construction. These are divided into
buildings and non-building structures, and make up the infrastructure of a human
society. There are also animal-built structures, such as anthills and beaver dams.

Structures built by humans are broadly divided into categories because of their
varying design approaches and standards:

 Residential buildings and Commercial buildings

 Industrial buildings, sites and installations

 Civil constructions

The Ninth Malaysia Plan continues to emphasize the need to strengthen

economic growth in the Malaysian construction industry. The success of the
construction industry depends on various parties and continuously facing new
challenges. As a Civil Engineer professional, you are expected to keep up the changes
in the industry and contribute to the industry through constant research and willing to
introduce new techniques. As a part of the team for construction and development
department, you are required to study and carry out a design of a structure based on
your field of interest and justify the choice.

You have to apply the skills and knowledge developed throughout the study and
valuable personnel experience.

Task 1:
LINTON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
B.Eng(Hons) in Civil Engineering

 Select a structure from the following:

• Commercial Building such as shopping complex, auditorium etc.

• Educational buildings such as schools, colleges etc.

• Industrial buildings

• Residential buildings

 Identify the overall planning and schedule for completing various stages of the
project.
 Decide the approach / methodology of project.
 Identify the sources required at each stage.

Task 2:
 Data collection and observation to carry out for the analysis.
 Present the data collected in agreed format.

Task 3:
 Analyse the structure based on structure selected based on relevant theory
(Either manual or by software).
 Discuss the steps used in the analysis of the structure.
 Recommendation from the analysis of the structure.

Task 4:
 Design the structure based on your analysis report.
 Discuss the steps used in the design of the structure.
 Recommendation from the design of the structure.
 Present the design in the appropriate format.

Task 5:
 Produce and present your study and design in a report.
 Present the finding via formal class presentation.

Design Report:
A detailed log of the work progress should be attached in the design report. The design
report should follow the sequence:
1) Assignment brief
2) Acknowledgement
3) Abstract
4) List of figures
5) List of tables
6) List of contents
7) Chapter 1 - Introduction
8) Chapter 2 - Literature survey
9) Chapter 3 - Plan of the building (Elevation, Section, 3D projection)
10) Chapter 4 - Analysis of structure
11) Chapter 5 - Design of structure
12) Chapter 6 - Reinforcement detailing
13) Chapter7 - Conclusion
14)References
15)Log book
16)Appendices

The design report should be submitted in the following format:

1. The final individual project work should be submitted as a report.
2. A format requirement of the report is FONTS: Arial, size 12, text justify, 1.5
spacing. Major title should be in size 14 with bold. Subtitle should be in size 12
with bold.
3. Margins should follow the following specification: Left – 1.5 inches and the other
side’s as 1 inch.
4. References should be in the Harvard format.
5. The students are required to present their finding to the rest of the year towards
the final assessments, noting any feedback about good practice. They are also
required to shows their finding through photographs, pictures, technical drawing,
graph and charts, and flow diagrams.
6. Two copies should be submitted in School office.

Note:
1) This is entirely an individual work and so no report should be the same with the
other. Copying if found in any aspects will be treated seriously leading to failing
the component.
2) No direct download from internet or copying from text books.
3) All the tasks in the assignment should be neatly presented.
4) Late submission is not allowed.
5) Report submitted without assignment brief will not be taken into consideration for
marking and will considered as breach of the conditions for submission.
