Artifact: Classroom Schedule

PTS 2: Personal and Professional Use of Technology: The competent teacher will apply

tools for enhancing personal professional growth and productivity; will use technology in

communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems and will

promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology resources.

Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and

understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.

This standard shows the importance of using technology in the many areas of teaching –

planning, instructing, communicating, assessing, organizing, etc. Technology is a way to

organize information and make it accessible for all parties involved. When technology is

incorporated into schooling, the teacher will find their productivity enhanced. Work will be

organized, simple, presentable, up-to-date, and accessible. Technology creates a way for the

teacher to share information with other educators, parents, and students. By using technology

appropriately, the teacher is being a role model for others. Soon, they will acquire the skills

necessary to use computer-based programs to enhance the work in their lives.

Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact that I chose is a schedule for a model fourth grade classroom. I used the program

Excel to organize each day. In making the schedule, I had to first consider the curriculum
necessities for a fourth grade classroom. In this assignment, I was required to think and problem-

solve like a teacher. For example, there were set days for Music/Specials. I also had to consider

when students with special needs were leaving the class. The Excel program helped me use trial-

and-error to make a schedule that fit classroom requirements. Also through Excel, my schedule

was organized, readable, and visually appealing. As I completed my assignment, I showed my

understanding of not only classroom scheduling, but also computer programming. Excel requires

an individual to know basic skills and operations. As I worked on the assignment, I explored

these operations. The schedule I made enhanced my schedule. I used the technology to my

advantage.

A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in the

future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

I have not yet used the classroom schedule in my classroom. It was a “model” schedule for a

classroom I may have in the future. When I practice in the profession, I will use Excel to create a

schedule. For one thing, the schedule is easy to revise. As I have learned in my practicum,

schedules often change. Excel offers the flexibly necessary for teachers to approach these

challenges. The schedule can also be printed and reproduced for the students, adminstration, and

parents. When students are aware of the schedule, they know their expectations as they are

clearly layed-out in the Excel document. This also involves parents. They can plan times they

want to come out and volunteer. Also, administration often requires teachers to turn in schedules

at the beginning of the year. The Excel document is reproducible, clearly making tasks easier for
teachers.

Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I think this standard has definitely prepared me to teach and learn in a diverse society. In making

my schedule, I had to consider diverse learners. The Excel program helped me move through the

scheduling process flexibly. When I needed to revise a “time block” to consider children who

were leaving for Special Education, I was able to easily do this on the program. This same

process would not have been as simple if I did not use Excel. Also
