1.0 Introduction
In this Hands-on Labs session, we’re going to learn how to install and configure Windows 7 OS which we
then use to install your own private online KnowledgeTree Document Management System. However, for
enterprise environment you may want to install a server version instead i.e., Win 2k3/2k8 Active Directory
if possible to manage your centralized authentication..
KnowledgeTree is PHP-based, open source document management software that is easy to install and
use across a broad range of organizations. The features included in the community edition – including
workflow, version control and audit trails – help manage the document lifecycle, promote collaboration,
reduce paper and ensure compliance. KnowledgeTree Community Edition is licensed under the GNU GPL
version 3.
Hands-on Labs Session

In this Hands-on Lab session, you’ll learn how to setup virtual network on VMware (you may also use any
other virtual machines like MS VirtualPC, Linux Xen, or VirtualBox from Sun). In this lab session, we’ll
concentrate on installing KnowledgeTree DMS on a clean install Windows 7 machine. However, for
enterprise environment you may want to install a server version instead i.e., Win 2k3/2k8. Finally, we’ll go
through a step-by-step process to install KnowledgeTree CE DMS on Windows with all the necessary
prerequisites. You’ll also have opportunity to do some assignments at the end of the lab session. Upon
completion of the hands-on lab you’ll have gained a competency level and a capability to be able to plan
design implement and deploy a document management solution using KnowledgeTree DMS.
Part 1: Install & Configure Windows OS

It’s assumed that you already have any of the Windows XP/Vista/7/2003/2008 in place or know to install
one. If not you can check out our excellent hands-on manuals listed below to get you started.

Part 2: Download and Install KnowledgeTree DMS
Step 1: Install KTDMSU Pre-requisites

You may download & install the latest KnowledgeTree version as usual, by performing the following
procedure:
1. Download latest stable version. Click to Run when prompted and wait for the system complete
extracting and decompressing the software, as shown in Fig. 10

2. You should now be present with the Welcome to the KnowledgeTree Setup Wizard, as shown in Fig.
3. Click Yes to continue.

4. From Fig. 5, wait for the system to complete task, it will continue when done.

6. From Fig. 7, read and accept the license and click Next to continue.

10. From Fig. 11, wait for the system to complete task, it will continue when done.

when done.

13. You’re done with installing Zend Server, click on the Finish button to close the Wizard, see Fig. 14.

14. Zend server web page will automatically open, as shown in Fig. 15.

15. Set your password and either enter the license key if you have one, or click Enter without license as
shown in Fig. 16.

16. Now login with the password you just set above, as shown in Fig. 17.

17. You should now be logged in to your Zend Server web console, as shown in Fig. 18.

18. Done with this re-requisite section, let’s move to the install of KTDMS on the next section.
Step 2: Install KnowledgeTree DMS

19. You should now be taken back to the KTDMSU installation Wizard as shown in Fig. 19.

20. From 20, read and accept the license, and then click Next to continue.

21. From 21, click on the Install button start installation.

22. From 21, wait for the system to complete the current task, it will continue when done.

23. From 23, accept the default selection, and then click Finish to close the Wizard window.

Note1 : before starting KTDMSU final installation, please check that you can access the MySQL
database server, as follows:
C:\program Files\Zend\MySQL51\bin>mysql –u root

Note 2: and as you can seen above, we are able to successfully login to our MySQL database
server
24. When you click on the Finish button from Fig.23, should be atomically taken to KTDMSU’ browser
installation Wizard, as shown in Fig. 25. Click Next to continue.

25. From Fig. 26, read and accept the license agreement.

Note: here we’re using secure https port 443, but yours could indicate http port 80.

30. From Fig. 31, accept the default selection of database name and root user, and click Next to continue.
Warning! for windows based system there is no password. However, for production environment
please do ensure that you have set the database root user password!
