The project I have selected for my English 320 Unit 4 individual project is to make pamphlets
for several Juvenile Correctional Centers in North Dakota that could be used as a way for
families of those who are incarcerated to gain information about the facilities. I hope to have a
career working in the Juvenile Justice System after graduation. I would then work closely with
one or more of the Juvenile Correctional Facilities around the state. As a Criminal Justice major I
have general knowledge about these centers, but nothing specific to each facility. I decided that it
would be beneficial for my future career to pick several facilities and make informational
pamphlets about each one. I also thought that these pamphlets would be a great way to provide
information to other people, such as family or friends of juveniles.

Situation:
As I stated above, I would like to create pamphlets on several Juvenile Correctional Centers in
North Dakota. This would serve the purpose of helping me to learn more about the facilities I
hope to work closely with in the future. The limited knowledge that I possess about correction
centers comes from majoring in Criminal Justice, as well as personal experience with friends
who have been incarcerated. However, I don’t think that most people know very much about
such facilities. These pamphlets would serve as a quick and easy source of information to family
and friends of juveniles living in the correctional centers.

Project Summary:
This project will consist of three pamphlets, one for three different Juvenile Correctional Centers
in North Dakota. Specifically, each pamphlet will inform readers on what kind of help each
facility offers, living quarters, recreational activities available, and visitation rights. The project
will consist of three pamphlets: one for the Dakota Horizons Youth Center in Dickinson, one for
the North Dakota Youth Correctional Center in Mandan, and one for the Ward County Juvenile
Detention Center in Minot.

Writing:
The writing associated with my project will not be too complex. Most of the writing will be in
sections and bullet points, explaining one of the topics I stated above. There will also be writing
to explain the pictures within the pamphlets.
Visual:
The visual components of my project will lie within the pamphlets. Majority of this will be made
up of the pictures that I include. I will also use headings, bullet points, and possibly graphs if
necessary. All of these visual aids with help the readers get a clearer idea of what the correctional
centers look like, as well as the services they offer.

Reading:
The reading component for my project will consist of a works cited list in APA format, located at
the end of this proposal. The reading list at the end will not only include sources of information
that I will include in my pamphlets, but also examples and research that I have done to get a
better feel for the project.

Objectives:
At this point, I have a limited knowledge about Juvenile Correctional Centers. However, it is my
goal after graduation to work with juveniles and therefore would be working in correspondence
with one or more correction centers within North Dakota. This leads me to my set of objectives:
 I will conduct research on each of the three facilities. Thereby learning more about each
one, which will hopefully help me in my career after graduation.
 I will gain an extensive understanding about services, recreational activities, and
visitation rights that each center offers.
 I will take this information and use it to create pamphlets so that others can also achieve a
better understanding of how each correction center helps and the services they offer.
 I will also learn how to make efficient pamphlets. This will help me because I will be
working very closely with many different kinds of people in my future. This project will
be a great learning experience for me because communication is very important in my
field.
 I will learn how to condense important information into a small, easy to understand
pamphlet. This is important, as I will often have to deliver and explain information to
many people in my future.

Methods:
My plan for completing my project is fairly simple but does require multiple steps. The steps for
a successful completion of my project are as follows:
 First, I had to do some research and write up a project proposal. This proposal contains
my basic plan for why, how, and when I will get my project accomplished.
 Next, I will do more extensive research on how to make an efficient pamphlet. I will also
further research each of the correctional centers to get as much information as possible.
 After this, I will begin actually making the pamphlets. To do this, I will use Microsoft
Office Publisher. I plan to make these into three-fold, front and back pamphlets with
headings, bullet points, and pictures.
 Throughout the time I am working on my project, I will be keeping track of my progress
so that I can write a progress report.
 Lastly, I will finalize my pamphlets and complete the project by writing my reflection.
Timeline:
I have planned out a timeline so that I can manage my time accordingly and get my project done.
