Descripció
English 1 is the first in a series of three courses which students will normally study over a period of three semesters. Please
note that THIS IS NOT A COURSE FOR BEGINNERS, and it is assumed that students will have an intermediate level of
English before they enrol.
A working knowledge of English is essential for university students today, both for their studies and their professional careers.
Specifically, in today's Information Society a general level of competency in the language provides students with access to a
wealth of information and the possibility of participating successfully in the ever-changing needs of our present global world,
both on a personal and a professional level. It is for this reason that English 1, 2 and 3 are obligatory subjects in the degree
courses at the UOC.
Informació prèvia a la matrícula

Objectius i competències
The overall objective of English 1, 2 and 3 is to bring students' level of competency in reading, listening and
writing up to the equivalent of level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
More specifically, assuming that students will possess prior knowledge of English, the UOC courses aim
to provide students with extensive practice, consolidating basic communication skills and increasing their
confidence in using the language. After completing English 1, 2 and 3, students should be able to:
· Read texts on academic, professional and general subjects in English with little recourse to reference
books/dictionaries.
· Write notes, short reports, etc., in acceptable English and with little recourse to reference books/
dictionaries.
· Understand spoken English on topics typically encountered in social, academic or professional settings.
As to oral skills, there will be one assessed oral activity during the term. However, students will not be
expected to take part in online real-time conversations.
Finally, an important aim of English 1, 2 and 3 is to introduce students to the enormous range of language
resources on the Web so that they can supplement the course materials if they wish and continue to improve
their language skills once they have finished the courses.
Continguts
Anglès I • set.10 feb.11 3 UOC
The course will cover reading, writing, listening and speaking. Topics of specific relevance to students'
degree areas will be covered as well as a variety of themes of general interest. Reading and listening texts
will be used as the basis for
- developing students' communication skills,
- increasing their vocabulary,
- ensuring the correct use of relevant grammatical structures.
Students will probably have previous experience of courses based principally on grammatical contents. This
is not the case with English 1, 2 and 3. It is assumed that students will have already studied basic English
sentence structures and therefore in the UOC materials there is no grammatical syllabus as such. This
does not mean that there is no grammar, but that students will not progress systematically through a series
of grammatical structures. The grammar exercises and reference materials provided are a resource for
students to use as necessary in order to improve their weak areas.
Students' work will be based on 6 Continuous Assessment (CA) Activities throughout the term. These will be
based on units in the course materials.
Students following Continuous Assessment will also be expected to take two online Tests during the term.

English I Web
There are 8 units in the English I Web materials, which are located in the 'Recursos' space in the classroom.
4 of these units will be used in the class Activities. Students should study the other four units in the course
materials on their own for extra practice.
English I degree-related materials
These materials, also located in the classroom under the 'Recursos' space, contain units specifically
designed for the various degrees at the UOC. 2 of these units will be used for Continuous Assessment (CA)
Activities. Your teacher will indicate to you the titles of the units you should study.
Structure of the units (English I Web or English I degree-related materials)
Each of the units is related to a specific theme and contains exercises based on the following language
areas:
§ Reading
§ Listening
§ Grammar
§ Vocabulary
§ Speaking
§ Writing
The Glossary in each unit provides explanations for key vocabulary items and students can also hear the
correct pronunciation of the words/expressions.
The Dictionary provides students with definitions of words on the Cambridge Dictionaries Online Web site.
The Grammar Reference section provides students with explanations and examples of grammar points
which are often problematic for learners at this level.
Students are provided with a great deal of material to study throughout the course but should also consult dictionaries, grammar
and vocabulary books where relevant.
Below is a selection that we recommend for language learners. Students may already have other books of this type which are
not on this list. These should not be thrown away, they may be just as useful.
Dictionaries Monolingual dictionaries
§ English Vocabulary in Use: Upper Intermediate. McCarthy, M. & O'Dell, F. (2001). Cambridge University Press. Second
book in the English Vocabulary in Use series, aimed at upper-intermediate learners.
§ English Vocabulary in Use: Advanced. McCarthy, M. & O'Dell, F. (2002). Cambridge University Press. Third book in the
English Vocabulary in Use series, aimed at advanced learners.
§ Business Vocabulary in Use. Mascull, B. (2002). Cambridge University Press. Same format as the English Vocabulary in
Use series, aimed at intermediate level learners of business English.
Metodologia
The way to improve linguistic skills in any language is, first and foremost, to use the language as much as possible. Students
will be expected to communicate and to submit all their work in English and in general, the more they read, write, listen to and
speak English throughout the course, the better. Students' progress will be the direct result of:
- participating in the classroom,
- working on the exercises in the Course Materials,
- contributing to all the Continuous Assessment Activities and doing the Continuous Assessment Tests.
The course materials are very complete and provide students with more materials than they will probably need to use during the
term. In each unit, the teacher will advise students which materials they need to focus on and which are optional.
However, students should organise their studies and do extra work according to their individual needs. For example, students
who are weak in grammar should spend more time doing the grammar exercises, while students who need to improve their
listening comprehension skills should devote more time to those sections of the materials dealing with this and additional
resources on the Web.
It is important to remember that in a distance learning environment such as ours, it is the student's responsibility to work on
those aspects of the language he/she feels are most necessary. The teacher will always be available to give relevant advice.
Classroom spaces
Notice Board - Instructions for the Continuous Assessment Activities and other important general information related to the
Tests, Exam, marks, etc are posted here.
Forum - Most of the exercises in the materials are self-correcting but some of the Guided Writing and Composition exercises
have no key. Students will be asked to complete these as part of their Continuous Assessment work and send them to the
Forum in their classroom. Here they will also be expected to participate in class discussions and to enjoy lighter activities such
as jokes, language games and quizzes set by the teacher.
Exercises - Students will be able to practise specific aspects of the language here by doing grammar-based or error-correction
exercises. These exercises will be prepared by the teacher, based on the common needs of the students in the class.
LANGblog - This is the classroom audioblog. Students will be able to practise listening and oral skills with it by listening to other
classmates' audio/video posts and by recording themselves. Here students will also post their contributions to the assessed oral
activity.
Activities and Exercises
Instructions for each Activity will be posted by the teacher on the Notice Board. There will then be a period of approximately
10 days for students to send their contributions to the Forum. Tasks for Exercises will be set at the teacher's discretion.
Students are encouraged to participate in both spaces (Forum and Exercises) as frequently as possible and are strongly
advised to follow the recommended deadlines for submitting contributions for classroom activities.
Continuous work
Although different students will have different rhythms of work, "continuous" assessment means that students should work
at a constant pace, submitting their work regularly and continuously throughout the term, NOT just presenting a number of
backdated pieces of work in the final days of the term.
Students may not present work for more than 2 CA Activities in any seven-day period.

Avaluació continuada
Students can pass English I in one of the following two ways:
1. by successfully completing the requirements for Continuous Assessment.
or
The Continuous Assessment Mark will be based on the work completed for Continuous Assessment
Activities (50%) + the results of two Tests (50%).
In order to pass Continuous Assessment, students MUST
a) complete both tests on time,
AND
b) submit contributions to the classroom Forum, of an appropriate length and quality, for each of the 6
Continuous Assessment Activities following their teacher's instructions,
AND
c) have a total average of 55% for tests and contributions to the Forum.
Please remember that students may not present work for more than 2 CA Activities in any seven-day period.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"No presentat" vs. a letter mark
If students participate in fewer than 4 CA activities in the Forum AND do not do either of the two Tests, they
will receive a "No presentat" as their final CA mark.
If students do more than this, they will receive a final CA mark of A, B, C+, C-, or D.
In cases where students have not fulfilled the minimum requirements listed in the above section (Continuous
Assessment CA), the final CA mark will be a fail.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tests
Students will have nine days to complete each Test and send it to "Assessment".
Tests submitted after the deadline will NOT be accepted. A key with the answers will be posted to the
classroom calendar shortly after the deadline expires.
Plagiarism - Originality of students' work
Anglès I • set.10 feb.11 10 UOC
All work submitted for Continuous Assessment MUST be original. This means:
1. Students must not copy or translate passages or sentences from other sources and present them as if
they were their own words.
2. Where relevant, original sources must be quoted.
3. Any work submitted for Continuous Assessment must be the student's own.
If the teacher considers any part of a student's work is not original, in contributions to the Forum or
particularly in the Tests, he/she will be disqualified from Continuous Assessment altogether and will
be obliged to take the face-to-face Final Exam.
Please click HERE (http://cv.uoc.edu/~s_eao_0005_u01/plagiarism_IM.htm) for more information
about plagiarism.
Avaluació final
English I students who have a Continuous Assessment mark of A, B or C+ can choose to have this mark
count as the final course mark, without doing an exam. However they can choose to do the face-to-face final
exam if they wish in order to try and raise their mark. In this case, the student's final course mark will be the
combination of the Exam mark and the Continuous Assessment mark, according to the criteria established
by UOC.
Students who do not do Continuous Assessment or who have obtained C- or D as their Continuous
Assessment mark MUST pass the final exam in order to pass the course.
Students may bring dictionaries to the exam. Dictionaries in electronic format are not permitted.
Please note that on the final exam 40 - 54 out of 100 corresponds to a C- (i.e. 50% is not a pass mark).
Feedback
Feedback from the teacher
Teachers will indicate common weaknesses in students' written tasks for Continuous Assessment and will provide exercises on
these. In general, they will not correct individual errors in each piece of work submitted.
During the course, students will receive 2 messages from their teacher commenting on their progress.
