AREA & PRODUCTION ESTIMATES OF SOYBEAN IN INDIA

KHARIF (MONSOON) 2010
(Based on crop survey conducted by SOPA – September 15 to 27, 2010)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

To assess the reliable estimates of national productivity and production of soybean in India
during 2010, SOPA conducted soybean crop survey in major states of the country from
September 15 to 27, 2010. Relevant data was generated on various yield attributes to compute
realistic productivity of soybean and production estimates of this crop.

As reported by the Department of Agriculture of different states in India, during 2010, national
acreage under soybean cultivation slightly decreased to 93.033 lakh hectares from 96.709 lakh
hectares in 2009. However, inspite of late monsoon, subsequent good rains and favaurable
weather conditions resulted in better national productivity. The estimated yield is 1089 Kg/Ha.
against 1006 Kg/Ha. in 2009. Accordingly, the estimated national production of soybean
during this year (2010) would be to 101.283 lakh MT compared to that of 97.246 lakh MT during
2009 resulting in 4.15% growth.

Objective & Methodology of Survey :

For appraising reliable estimates of soybean production in India during Kharif (monsoon) 2010, SOPA
conducted Soybean Crop Survey (September15-27, 2010) in three major states (M.P., Maharashtra and
Rajasthan). Final area coverage under soybean in different states was obtained from the respective State
Departments of Agriculture.
The survey of soybean crop was conducted for assessing (a) rainfall pattern (b) crop development (c) pod
formation (d) yield per hectare (e) production estimate of the crop in the different districts of the above
states.
Two teams were constituted for the purpose which visited the farmers’ field in different locations. The team
comprised of our Manager/Assistant Manager (SDP), field assistants and one representative each from
Geochem Laboratories Pvt. Ltd and QSS Pvt. Ltd.
Data on plant population, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod were colleted from plot
of 1 sqm each in randomly selected 199 plots in Madhya Pradesh, 77 plots in Maharashtra and 42 plots in
Rajasthan. Estimated yield per hectare was computed with the help of standard formula used for the
purpose.
Damages if any, caused due to insects and disease infestation as well as maturity status of the crop was
also recorded. For the purpose, an exhaustive proforma was developed. The summarized data depicting
the soybean crop performance during the year under report is presented in tables 1 to 4.
MADHYA PRADESH :
Nearly 30% sowing took place during June. Good rains were received during first week of July resulting in
fast increase in sowing all over. The entire sowing was completed by third week of July.
The germination by and large was good and the vegetative growth was excellent.
Very minor incidences of insect attack/disease were seen. In most fields weed management was good.
Minor incidences of pest were reported. However, it was controlled by timely spraying of insecticides.
Bhopal, Raisen, Vidisha, Sehore, Shajapur and Bundelkhand region suffered due to scanty rains. The
grain size will be smaller and productivity is likely to be affected.
Early varieties have matured and harvesting has already commenced in few districts which will pick up in
next two weeks and likely to get completed by 15th October, 2010.
It will not be out of the place to mention that in Madhya Pradesh, impact of extension efforts were clearly
visible. By and large farmers had adopted most of the appropriate technology of soybean production in
general and weed management and plant protection measures in particular.
Production Estimates :
The estimated yield per hectare is 1105 Kg. and total production of soybean would be around 60.987 lakh
MT.

MAHARASHTRA :

Monsoon and wether were largely favourable this year against draught condition last year.
Germination, vegetative growth, flowering, podding etc. have been very good all over. No major
attack of insect pests and disease were observed. Largelly, JS-335 variety was sown.
Nagpur, Vardha, Chandrapur, Hinguli and Wasim had higher rains which resulted into weeds and
the productivity is likely to take a hit.
Production Estimates :

During Kharif 2010, the area sown under soybean is 26.030 lakh hectare which is 14% lower
than Kharif 2009 (30.320 lakh ha).
The entire sowing was completed prior to June end.
The estimated yield per hectare is 1058 kg and total production would be 27.543 Lakh MT. Drop
in production is largely attributed to reduction in sowing area.

RAJASTHAN :

During Kharif 2010, area sown under soybean is 6.920 lakh hectare which is almost at par with Kharif
2009 (7.094 lakh ha). Entire region under soya cultivation received normal rains and the weather
conditions were very favourable all through. The sowing was completed by mid July.
No attack of insects, disease were seen.
Production Estimates :
The estimated yield per hectare is 1103 kg. The total production would be 7.633 lakh MT against
6.094 lakh MT during 2009 thereby registering a growth of 24.5%.
