Read the following passage. For questions 51 - 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
Human memory, formerly believed to be rather inefficient, is really more sophisticated than that of a
computer. Researchers approaching the problem from a variety of points of view have all concluded that there
is a great deal more stored in our minds than has been generally supposed. Dr. Wilder Penfield, a Canadian
neurosurgeon, proved that by stimulating their brains electrically, he could elicit the total recall of specific
events in his subjects’ lives. Even dreams and other minor events supposedly forgotten for many years
suddenly emerged in detail.
Although the physical basis for memory is not yet understood, one theory is that the fantastic capacity
for storage in the brain is the result of an almost unlimited combination of interconnections between brain cells,
stimulated by patterns of activity. Repeated references to the same information support recall. Or, to say that
another way, improved performance is the result of strengthening the chemical bonds in the memory.

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 51 - 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
In 1752, Benjamin Franklin made his textbook experiment with a brass key and a silk kite that he flew in a
thunderstorm to prove that lightning and electricity are the same thing. In 1920, a kite-flying championship for
families and individuals was held in London. These two seemingly unrelated events underscore the fact that
kites can be flown for both pleasure and scientific purposes. For example, in the 1800s weather bureaus flew
kites to record temperature and humidity at certain altitudes. On one occasion, ten kites were strung together
and flown at a height of four miles to lift men and carry cameras aloft.
The kite’s ability to fly depends on its construction and the way that its line is attached. The familiar
diamond – shaped kite flies when its covered face is aligned against the wind flow. The line attached to the
nose of the kite pulls it into the wind, thus creating the necessary angle for the lift force. If the kite’s
construction and the angle of the air stream are correct, the kite will encounter greater pressure against its
face and lower pressure against its back. The difference in the pressure creates a lift that causes the kite to rise
until it hangs level from its bridle. Its angle against the wind should be sufficiently large or small to create
maximum lift to overcome both drag and gravity. The towing point to which the line is attached is important
because it sets the kite’s angle relative to the air flow. Although the kite must be headed up and into the wind
with a velocity of 8 to 20 miles per hour, it can maintain its position through a tail, a rudder, a keel, vents, or
tassels.

51. What is the main topic of the passage?

A. How kites can be used.
B. Why kites are flown.
C. What parts kites consist of.
D. What makes kites stay up in the air.
52. According to the passage, the kite flies when its nose is
A. pointed away from the ground.
B. pointed into the wind flow.
C. pointed to the ground.
D. pointed downwards
53. What is the necessary condition for the kite to fly?
A. The kite must be sufficiently strong to withstand great pressure.
B. The kite must be diamond-shaped, and the wind of a certain velocity.
C. The pressure against its back must be lower than the pressure against its face.
D. The pressure of the air flow must be lower than the weight of the kite.
54. According to the passage, the line of the kites is important because it
A. lifts the kite’s cover and frame into the air space.
B. contributes to the shape of the kite and extends it.
C. determines the angle between the kite and the air flow.
D. conveys the direction of the wind and the air flow.
55. The word “velocity” most nearly means
A. force
B. span
C. speed
D. measure

IV. COMPREHENSION READING
Read the following passage. For questions 51 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all
the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between
the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to
make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn
to do without being taught – to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with
those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a
chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought
that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to.
Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other
children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of
saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let
him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to
help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of
grades, exams, marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must
some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school
teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the
rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and
teachers say, ‘But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the
world?’ Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it.
51. What does the other think is the best way for children to learn things?
A. by copying what other people do
B. by making mistakes and having them corrected
C. by listening to explanations from skilled people
D. by asking a great many questions
52. What does the other think teachers do which they should not do?
A. They give children correct answers.
B. They point out children’s mistakes to them.
C. They allow children to mark their own work.
D. They encourage children to copy from one another.
53. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are
A. not really important skills.
B. more important than other skills.
C. basically different from learning adult skills.
D. basically the same as learning other skills.
54. Exams, grades and marks should be abolished because children’s progress should only be estimated by

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 51 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
There are many varieties of spider in the American Southwest, but none receives more respect than the
western black widow, Latrodectus Hesperus. This poisonous spider, also called the “hour-glass” or “shoe-
button” spider for the shape of the red markings on its abdomen, produces a venom 15 times more powerful
than that of a rattlesnake. However, few deaths can be blamed on this insect because bites are rare and only a
small amount of poison enters the body.
The female adult black widow may reach a length of 1 ¼ inches, while the smaller male averages ¼
inch long. The adult female has a shiny black bulb-shaped abdomen, which distinguishes it from the male of the
species. The male is generally brown with red and white markings on its flat underside.
The female adult deposits its eggs in specially constructed sacs that hold from 50 to 250 eggs. The tiny
pale spiderlings hatch within a few months and gradually develop into adults in one to two years. Some females
live up to three years. The male does not fare so well, as it sometimes suffers the fate of being consumed by
the female after the summer mating season.

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 51 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
Computer programmer David Jones earns £35,000 a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot
find a bank prepared to let him have a cheque card. Instead he has been told to wait another two years until he is
18.
The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of his age
is finding a job. David’s firm releases two new games for the expanding home computer market each month.
But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Despite his salary, earned by inventing new
programs within tight schedules, with bonus payments and profit-sharing, he cannot drive a car, take out a
mortgage or obtain credit cards.
He lives with his parents in their council house in Liverpool, where his father is a bus-driver. His company
has to pay £150 a month in taxi fares to get him the five miles to work and back every day because David cannot
drive.
David got his job with the Liverpool-based company four months ago, a year after leaving school with six
O-levels and working for a time in a computer shop. “I got the job because the people who run the firm knew I had
already written some programs,” he said.
“I suppose £35,000 sounds a lot but actually that’s being pessimistic. I hope it will come to more than that
this year”. He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother £20 a week. But most of
his spare time spent working.
“Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school,” he said. “but I had been studied it in
books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on
at school. Most people in this business are fairly young anyway.”
David added: “I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement is a possibility. You never know
when the market might disappear.”

51. Why is David different from other young people of his age?
A. He earns an extremely high salary.
B. He is not unemployed.
C. He does not go out much.
D. He lives at home with his parents.
52. David’s greatest problem is ________.
A. making the banks treat him as an adult.

B. he wanted to work with computers and staying at school did not help him.
C. he was afraid of getting too old to start computing.

55. Why does David think he may retire early?
A. You have to be young to write computer programs.

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 51 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or
D) to each question.
Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived during a period of earth's history called the Mesozoic Era, which is
also known as the Age of Reptiles. The first dinosaurs appeared more than 200 million years ago. For many
millions of years, they dominated the land with their huge size and strength. Then about 65 million years ago,
they died out rather suddenly, never to reemerge.
The word dinosaur comes from two Greek words meaning terrible lizard. Dinosaurs were not lizards, but
their appearance could be truly terrifying. The biggest ones weighed more than ten times as much as a mature
elephant and nearly equaled the size of most modem-day whales. The famous kinds of dinosaurs, including the
brontosaur, and tyrannosaurus rex, reached 80 to 90 feet in length. Not all dinosaurs were giants, however;
some were actually no larger than a chicken.
Scientists still do not know what caused dinosaurs to disappear. One theory involves a change in the
earth's climate. It is believed that temperatures dropped significantly towards the end of the Cretaceous Period.
Too large to hibernate and not having fur or feathers for protection, it is possible that the climate became too
chilly for dinosaurs. In contrast, other species having protection, such as the mammals and birds, were able to
survive.

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 66 – 70, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D) to
each question.

In 1752, Benjamin Franklin made his textbook experiment with a brass key and a silk kite that he flew in a
thunderstorm to prove that lightning and electricity are the same thing. In 1920, a kite-flying championship for
families and individuals was held in London. These two seemingly unrelated events underscore the fact that kites
can be flown for both pleasure and scientific purposes. For example, in the 1800s weather bureaus flew kites to
record temperature and humidity at certain altitudes. On one occasion, ten kites were strung together and flown at
a height of four miles to lift men and carry cameras aloft.
The kite's ability to fly depends on its construction and the way that its line is attached. The familiar
diamond - shaped kite flies when its covered face is aligned against the wind flow. The line attached to the nose of
the kite pulls it into the wind, thus creating the necessary angle for the lift force. If the kite's construction and the
angle of the air stream are correct, the kite will encounter greater pressure against its face and lower pressure
against its back. The difference in the pressure creates a lift that causes the kite to rise until it hangs level from its
bridle. Its angle against the wind should be sufficiently large or small to create maximum lift to overcome both drag
and gravity. The towing point to which the line is attached is important because it sets the kite's angle relative to
the airflow. Although the kite must be headed up and into the wind with a velocity of 8 to 20 miles per hour, it can
maintain its position through a tail, a rudder, a keel, vents, or tassels.

66. What is the main topic of the passage?

A. How kites can be used. B. Why kites are flown.
C. What parts kites consist of. D. What makes kites stay up in the air.
67. According to the passage, the kite flies when its nose is ________.
A. pointed away from the ground. B. pointed into the wind flow.
C. pointed to the ground. D. pointed downwards.
68. What is the necessary condition for the kites to fly?
A. The kite must be sufficiently strong to withstand great pressure.
B. The kite must be diamond-shaped, and the wind of a certain velocity.
C. The pressure against its back must be lower than the pressure against its
face.
D. The pressure of the airflow must be lower than the weight of the kite.

69. According to the passage, the line of the kites is important because it _____.
A. lifts the kite's cover arid frame into the air space.
B. contributes to the shape of the kite and extends it.
C. determines the angle between the kite and the air flow.
D. conveys the direction of the wind and the air flow.

D) to each question.

Hatred is a fundamental human emotion that has deep roots in society and culture. Psychologists
believe that group identity and cohesion depend to a large extent on having a common enemy. It seems that
the existence of "bad guys" is an important element in defining who we are within a larger realm. It could be
said that human beings love to hate.
The first signs appear early in life when a child, faced with blame for some mistake, immediately
accuses another child or an inanimate object such as a teddy bear. Later, on the schoolyard playground,
children in rival groups vie for attention and influence. These basic responses translate into more powerful
emotions later in life.
One area where deep-rooted hatred is exhibited is in the ethnic clashes that constantly occur around
the globe. These conflicts are not only over territory but also involve emotional issues of group identity and
unity of purpose. For many, there is no "us" without a "them" to hate. In a world where conflict between
superpowers is on the decline, it may be that humanity will have difficulty adapting to a state of mutual respect
and cooperation.

IV. COMPREHENSION READING

Read the following passage. For questions 52 – 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D)
to each question.
Probably the most famous film commenting on 20 th century technology is Modern Times, made in 1936.
Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe
working conditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin, together with healthy young farm boys, was lured to the city to
work as automotive assembly lines. Within four or five years, these young men’s health was destroyed by the
stress of work in the factories.
Scenes of factory interiors account for less than one-third of the footage of Modern Times, but they contain
some of the film’s most pointed social commentary as well as its funniest comic situations. No one who has seen
the film can ever forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the fast-moving conveyor belt, almost losing his
mind in the process.
Cleary, Modern Times has its faults, but it remains the best film treating technology within a social context.
It does not offer a radical social message, but it accurately reflects the sentiments of many who felt they were
helpless victims of an over-mechanized world.
52. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ________.
A. criticize the factory system of the 1930s
B. describe an important film
C. explain Chaplin’s style of acting

Modern Times except ________.
