Imagine
Nation
Annual Report 2009–2010
MISSION
Imagine Nation is, at its heart, a fun, new way for kids and
adults to experience American art. In addition to scavenger
hunts, backpack tours, classes, camps, family activity days and
all our school tours and outreach programs, Imagine Nation
also includes products, like t-shirts, sketch books and our new
children’s book Imagine American Art (coming in December to
the shop). The sales from these products will help to support
all of our programs for children and families moving forward.
The life cycle of an institution is much like that of people. They require
rejuvenation and determination to avoid deterioration and resignation.
In our 50th year we chose to move forward with an opportunity to
greatly increase the ability of the Museum to interact with its
community and promote American art and artists.
Our next and final step, now in progress, is to find the right
architectural team to see this process through and we have a
committee in place to do that.
Your Museum is at a crossroads. Despite our successes, we continue
to face economic challenges in supporting our annual operating
expenses. In light of that it might seem odd that we are embarking
on an ambitious building project. The key is that our campaign will
include a $15 million dollar goal for new endowment funds to support
operating expenses for the expansion and supplement our current $4
million endowment. Without the impetus of a much needed capital
expansion (you may have noticed that we took over our lecture room
for office space and took over our paneled rooms for lectures), those
endowment dollars would be nearly impossible to raise.
The Museum’s many activities over the past fiscal year can be viewed
as past, present and future. Here’s what we did, are currently doing,
and will do in the future to remain an important cultural center in
southwestern Pennsylvania.
Yesterday: The second half of the 2009–2010 fiscal year continued the
Museum’s celebration of our Fiftieth Anniversary. For the year’s final
exhibition we invited four guest curators from different walks of life to
interpret our collection as we have never seen before in Four
Perspectives on Fifty Years. And then we began a planning process
that will ensure the Museum has a healthy and vibrant future.
Tomorrow: Several initiatives this past year kept the future in mind. We
continued the expansion planning that began in FY2008–2009. We
completed our second Museum Assessment Program on Public
Dimension and learned that Museum has expanded its reach and is
doing an excellent job of meeting community needs and exceeding
visitor expectations. The study also confirmed that we face the
challenge of having inadequate space to properly exhibit our collection,
mount the types of exhibitions needed to stay true to our mission and
attract visitors from outside the region, and create the spaces
for education, public gatherings and other events. Committees were
formed to work on selecting an architect and initiate fundraising efforts.
We also realigned staff into new teams to more accurately reflect our
needs moving forward and to make sure we are working efficiently to
achieve our future goals.
