Security Overview
General
Niku security rights are very flexible. Companies can implement almost any security structure needed to protect
and control data. With that flexible comes complexity.
Niku security rights are by object, and within object, by functionality.

i.e. Resource - Create
Reports - Run
Initial rights are established for each resource by the Application Administrator, and can be assigned at the Global, OBS, or Instance levels.
Hierarchy
Global Rights:
Global rights apply to all objects, regardless of OBS or individual object.
Certain rights are global only as the OBS has not yet been established in order to invoke OBS rights
i.e. Project - Create
Company - Create
Administration - Access
OBS Rights:
Several rights can be established at the Global OR the OBS level.
i.e. Project - Edit Management
Resource - Hard Book
And some rights can ONLY be established at the OBS level.
i.e. Project - Edit Access Rights (to give other users project specific access to a project without going through the Admin)
Resource - Approve Time
Instance Rights:
Instance rights are the same as Global and OBS rights, except they apply to one specific instance of an object.
i.e. Project - Edit - XYZ Project
Resource - Hard Book - Tony Huey
Report - Run - Key Tasks and Milestones
Assigning Users to Security Rights

Resources are assigned their security rights by Group, OBS or Instance (or any combination).
Groups:
Groups can be created to simplify assigning users to security rights, particularly for large numbers of users.
Groups can be created with any combination of security rights, and are used to assign rights to users with similar functional profiles, particularly Global Rights.
i.e. Group "Project Creators/Managers" might include:
Activity Right(s)
Create Projects Project - Create (global)
Create Programs Management - Programs (global)
Run Reports Reports - Access (global)
Reports - Run (global)
Once the group is created, a resource (Project Managers) can be attached to that group and inherit all the group's rights.
OBS:
Rights that need to be restricted by OBS level are assigned to each resource by OBS.
i.e. Allow Tony Huey to view projects within her OBS unit only
Activity Right(s)
Edit the workplan PSIM: Project - Edit
Hard book resources within OBS PSIM: Resource - Hard Book
Instance
Rights that need to be restricted by object are assigned to each resource at the object instance.
i.e. Allow Chairman Bob to view the executive reports
Activity Right(s)
Run the Portfolio Dashboard report Report: Portfolio Dashboard: Reports - Run
Who can Assign Security Rights?

All security rights are assigned to users by the Application Administrator with one EXCEPTION:
Project level rights can be assigned by anyone with the right Project - Edit Access Rights.
This OBS-level right can be assigned by a Security Administrator AND it is automatically assigned to Project Managers.
Project Managers are those individuals who have been assigned to a project as the "Project Manager" in the Management properties.
This field can be changed by the project owner, but it defaults to the project creator when the project Management properties are enabled.
Project level rights include rights such as Edit Management, View Tasks, Financial Planning, Modify Baseline, etc.
