ASSIGNMENT SHEET

ASSIGNMENT
Each group will select a Multinational Corporation from a list provided by the instructor (see
First class posting). The group, through research and using skills and concepts acquired in this
course, will thoroughly analyze a subsidiary or business unit of the MNC with the goal of
pursuing new or continued expansion in an emerging market. A report will be generated that
will document the full analysis (internal, external, country, etc.), recommendations and
implementation of a competitive strategy. Each group will make a formal presentation of their
analysis and recommendations to the class during the last 3 lectures of the semester.

DUE DATE
All written reports (along with an electronic copy) are due at the start of class on
December 7th, 2010 (groups presenting on December 7th may make arrangement to submit
written report by December 9th, 2010). Presentations will be scheduled on November 29th,
December 6th and December 7th , 2010.

WRITTEN REPORT LENGTH AND STRUCTURE


The written report must be between 3,500 to 3,750 words (14 to 15 pages) in length, double
spaced (excluding, table of contents, appendices, tables, figures, etc.) and conform to
Concordia University writing standards and regulations. An appendix should be used
extensively to help support and substantiate your analysis

WRITTEN REPORT CONTENTS


The written report must include, but not be limited to, the following items performing a
comprehensive and thorough analysis of the MNC/Business Unit, Specific Industry and
countries (origin and for potential expansion). In doing so, it is essential to cover at least 3
topics from the course. Source(s) of data must be explicitly stated via footnotes and
references.

1. The selected MNC’s Current Situation (Key Management Problems/Challenges


(internal/external), Strategy, Capabilities, Operations, Organizational Structure, Financial
situation, Cost structure, Performance, etc.)

2. External Analysis: Macro environment and Industry assessment (for key market):
Industry Forces, Life-cycle, Critical success factors, Competitor Analysis, etc.

3. Country Analysis: Thorough analysis of countries for continued/ potential expansion


(incl. risk assessment, opportunity potential)

4. Evaluation of alternatives for an international expansion strategy (Revenue growth


and/or Operational savings)

5. Develop and Recommend a winning Competitive Strategy looking at growth of Revenue


and/or reduction of cost structure

6. Detailed Implementation plan (incl. timeline, financials, etc.

7. Complete References and Bibliography.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
The following guidelines should be followed for the presentation component of this project:

1. The presentation should last be between 15 and 20 minutes in duration. Presentations


lasting longer than 20 minutes will be penalized.
2. Each group member is required to present. Any student absent for the presentation will
automatically receive a zero for the presentation component of the Term project Grade.
3. You can select to present to the shareholders, top executives, managers, board members,
or even students. It is your call. This will be announced prior to the presentation.
4. Overhead PowerPoint slides (or equivalent) are to be used. A hard copy of the
presentation must be provided to the instructor in-class just prior to the presentation.
5. A class-room Question and Answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation.
During this Q&A session other groups will compete with each other to ask substantive
questions from the presenters. Each group can ask only one question. The group that asks
the best question will receive bonus points for all its members.
6. Presentations should be carefully thought out and rehearsed to ensure they are well
coordinated, succinct and concise with ideas flowing smoothly.

EVALUATION
Each group will be assessed based on the quality of your analysis, application of concepts
covered in this course, consistency throughout your paper, quality of your sources of
information, and of course the quality of your writing.

ALLOCATION
The term project is worth 30% of the course grade (22.5% for written report and 7.5% for
presentation). Each group is asked to complete page 4 and submit the signed original to the
instructor with the written report. If the sheet is not completed or submitted, equal distribution of
the group grade for the report and presentation will be allocated to each group member.
