Although we typically use the words “domain” and “range” with functions,
we have also looked at the domain and range of relations (or “rules”) that
are not functions.
1 G is the rule that assigns each person to his or her mother. (input is the
person)
a) Is G a function? Explain your answer.
b) What is the domain of G?
c) What is the range of G?
d) If G is a function, is it a 1-to-1 function? Explain your answer.
3. K is the rule that assigns each real number to the nearest prime
number. For instance, K would assign the number 8 to the prime 7, or we
could write K(8)=7.
a) Is K a function? Explain your answer.
b) What is the domain of K?
c) What is the range of K?
d) If K is a function, is it a 1-to-1 function? Explain your answer.
4. Your problem.
a) Make up an example of a function that can only be described with
words. (Make sure that your rule is a function.)
b) What is the domain of your function?
c) What is the range of your function?
d) Is your function 1-to1? Explain your answer.
